Dorothy 'Dottie' G. Fried

Died April 24, 2008
 Dancer and instructor, Leesburg

 

Dorothy “Dottie” Gwen Fried, 65, of Leesburg, a dancer and dance instructor, died April 24 at Inova Loudoun Hospital. She had breast cancer.

Friends may call Thursday, May 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle S.E., Leesburg. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home May 2 at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Leesburg Union Cemetery.

Ms. Fried was born Jan. 27, 1943, in Flint, Mich., to Dorothy Taylor Graff, currently of Frankenmuth, Mich., and the late Max Henry Graff.

After studying dance at Julliard College and University of Michigan, Ms. Fried earned her master's degree in dance from American University. Her career in dance spanned decades and the country.

Ms. Fried established the Long Island Modern Dance Company and co-founded the Manning-Fried Dance Theatre in Los Angeles. She was a faculty member at Towson State University and co-founded the Kinetics Dance Theatre School and Company in Ellicott City, Md. Before moving to Leesburg to be with family, she operated the Arts PlayCare Center in Columbia, Md. She also was involved in several organizations as a community organizer.

Survivors also include a longtime companion, F. Keith Nichols, and his son, Austin Nichols, both of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Carlotta Fried of Leesburg, and Jennifer Oliver of Ashburn; two sisters, Patricia Arvilla of Michigan and Mary-Lou Hesler of Florida; one brother, Hank Graff of Michigan; and two granddaughters.
