Family Celebrates Fourth-Generation Eagle Scouts

© Leesburg Today - 09/30/2015

The Schaefer family of Leesburg added to the clan's long history of Eagle Scouts as Nicholas Schaefer, 15, and Ethan Schaefer, 13, recently were recognized for achieving the coveted rank during a ceremony at the Leesburg Community Church.

They represent the fourth generation of Eagle Scouts in their family and bring to 113 the number of Eagle Scouts to come from 31-year-old Boy Scout Troop 982.

Mayor Kristen Umstattd was among those attending the court of honor, and she read town proclamations recognizing the boys for their achievements and community services projects. Del. Randy Minchew (R-VA-10), a fellow Eagle Scout, also spoke, offering guidance to those commemorated.

The Schaefers' great-uncle Ernest A. Schmidt of Chicago, IL, received his Eagle Scout rank in 1926 and was later recognized with the Distinguished Eagle Scout award. Nicholas' and Ethan's grandfathers, Richard Schaefer of Dayton, OH, and Thomas George of Austin, TX, also are Eagle Scouts and awarded the boys the original sterling silver medals they earned in the 1950s. David Schaefer, the boys' father, also is an Eagle Scout.

Their mother, Carolina Schaefer, is the leader of Girls Scout Troop 5293.
