Giant, Food Lion parent companies plan to merge

© Leesburg Today - 06/24/2015

The corporate owners of Maryland-based Giant Food and North Carolina-based Food Lion announced plans Wednesday to join forces and merge the two companies.

Giant is owned by Dutch supermarket chain Ahold and Food Lion by Belgium-based Delhaize. The new merger would make the company the fourth largest grocery retailer in the world, according to the Associated Press.

The merger means the new Ahold Delhaize corporation will own 6,500 stores with 375,000 employees, according to a news release from Food Lion. Those stores will service more than 50 million customers per week in the U.S. and Europe.

There's no word yet on whether stores locally will merge or continue to operate separately as Giant and Food Lion.

Giant operates 169 stores with 159 pharmacies in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington with more than 20,000 employees.

Food Lion operates 1,100 stores in the southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states with more than 60,000 employees.
