Hurricane Joaquin may bring heavy rain, high winds this weekend

Keep an eye on Hurricane Joaquin.

The tropical storm strengthened to hurricane status Wednesday as it headed toward the Bahamas with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.

The National Weather Service says it's too soon to tell if Joaquin will impact the East Coast, but ""there is at least potential for heavy rain and flooding … windy conditions and coastal flooding"" in the D.C. area.

Joaquin is now a Category 1 hurricane but is expected to strengthen in the next 48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters say another period of significant rainfall is possible Thursday night into Friday night due to ""a tropical atmosphere,"" particularly in areas to the west.

Tuesday's intense rain left the ground saturated, meaning there is a high chance of flooding with any more storms.
