Leesburg Aviation Expo Takes Off

Ten years ago, Julie O'Brien helped put on the first Aviation Education & Career Expo, and 100 students and four vendors showed up. It's since taken off.

On Friday, Leesburg Executive Airport hosted the 10th annual aviation expo, and drew 50 vendors and 600 high school students from Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia.

""It's grown like crazy,"" said O'Brien, director of marketing and fixed-base operations for Leesburg Executive Airport.

The expo gave students a chance to see aerial demonstrations, view aircraft displays and visit with military personnel and representatives from aviation programs from universities as far away as Kansas.

O'Brien said 60 high schools are invited to attend the expo, and each is asked to hand-pick students who have an interest in aviation.

The finale of the day's event was the award ceremony that presented 20 students with a total of $68,000 in scholarships to help propel them toward aviation-related careers.
