Leesburg Leaders Hope Turn Restrictions Will Keep Bypass Traffic Moving

© Leesburg Today - 08/27/2015

Beginning today, drivers traveling westbound on Battlefield Parkway on the north side of Leesburg will be prohibited from turning right on a red light onto northbound Rt. 15 during the weekday evening rush hour.

The restriction will be in effect Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Leesburg Director of Public Works and Capital Projects Renée LaFollette stated the restriction would help control the flow of traffic on northbound Rt. 15 by preventing vehicles from blocking the intersection.

""This is part of trying to find a solution for that intersection,"" LaFollette said. ""It was a suggestion made awhile back and we'll see if that helps to not clog the intersection quite as much to help the northbound traffic.""

Leesburg Police will be monitoring the intersection and will issue warnings for the first two weeks of the initiative. After Sept. 10, drivers making an illegal right turn on red will be ticketed.

""It's one step to try,"" LaFollette said. ""It may or may not help. We'll be monitoring it to see if it does.""

LaFollette noted the town will also monitor Battlefield Parkway traffic, as some residents in Potomac Crossing are concerned that traffic there will back up to their neighborhood.

She also said that the main traffic problem along Rt. 15 resides further north outside of the town's corporate limits, and that VDOT has funded a current study to look at possible solutions.
