Leesburg Sandwich Shop Donates To Boulder Crest Retreat

For one day each year, sandwich shop Jersey Mike's doesn't take in any money for selling its fresh concoctions. Instead, each area picks a non-profit organization to donate all of the day's sales to. The Boulder Crest Retreat was this year's recipient for the Northern Virginia stores.

On Thursday at his Leesburg location, Loudoun County Jersey Mike's Franchisee Greg Switaj handed over a giant check in the amount of $44,967-representing all the sales generated March 25- to Boulder Crest Founder and Chairman Ken Falke

""The whole team of Jersey Mike's is really amazing. Just the fact that they chose us, we're honored by that,"" Falke said. ""Working with organizations like Jersey Mike's is the best thing for us because it raises money and it also raises awareness, which is our goal.""

It's the second year in a row that Jersey Mike's has contributed to the Bluemont retreat, which allows soldiers who were injured in combat and their families to relax and recuperate for free, as part of the company's ""Day of Giving"" initiative. Last year ,the franchise donated about $25,000, but with recent expansion that number nearly doubled this time around.

""We don't call it giving back, we call it giving, because we believe that's what we should do,"" Switaj said. "" Boulder Crest is a local organization that does great charity work. If you live in Northern Virginia, you should be helping in some shape or form because there are a lot of veterans. … They could use it maybe even more so than some of the big national organizations.""

In its first two years of operation Boulder Crest has served about 1,400 guests. Falke is gearing up for the second phase of the project, a $10 million campaign to support programming for combat stress recovery program. It's already raised $1.5 million, in part helped by Jersey Mike's.

""We've been amazed at the support that the community has provided in and around this project given that we're in the backyard of Loudoun County,"" Boulder Crest Director of Development Sarah Fehrer said. ""There's so many beautiful ways that the community has hugged around our work in support of military members and their families.""

Falke said the money would go directly into Boulder Crest's general account to pay for electrical and gas bills and help military members stay for free in one of four cabins.

Jersey Mike's is a sandwich shop that has 15 locations in Northern Virginia and five in Loudoun County, including Leesburg, Ashburn, Sterling, Purcellville and South Riding. Switaj said the franchise focuses on good customer service and making the ""best subs, freshly sliced and freshly grilled,"" as well as giving back to the community.
