Loudoun’s Top Speller Exits National Bee In Top 50

© Leesburg Today - 05/28/2015

The National Spelling Bee run is over for Loudoun Country Day School eighth-grader Shiv Lamba.

Lamba was one of just 49 spellers to make it to the semifinal round Thursday morning. However, he got tripped up on the word ""eupyrion,"" a 19th century greek match. He spelled the word with an ""e"" instead of a ""y.""

It was Lamba's first appearance at the national bee, being held in Washington, DC, and broadcast live on ESPN-3.

Yesterday, he survived three rounds, correctly spelling ""hacienda"" and ""obreptitious"" and scoring well on a written vocabulary exam and an oral exam.

In March, Lamba beat out 73 other elementary and middle school students at the Loudoun County Regional Spelling Bee, sponsored by Leesburg Today. He competed with 285 of the nation's top young spellers in the 88th Scripps National Spelling Bee.
