A 56-year-old Manassas man suffered fatal injuries early Sunday in a drunken driving crash on Centreville Road near Rugby Road, police said.

The victim, Ellery Darnell Penn, was a passenger in a 1996 Infiniti I30t driven by Carroll Arness Smith, a 45-year-old Dale City resident, Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok said.

The Infiniti crashed into a utility poll in the southbound lanes of Centreville Road about 5:45 a.m.

Smith and Penn were both flown by helicopter to an area hospital, where Penn later died of his injuries, Perok said.

Smith, of Nassau Drive, remained hospitalized Monday and is expected to recover.

Police have charged Smith with driving under the influence and driving on a revoked license, Perok said. Additional charges are pending.
