A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Virginia Railway Express train in Stafford early Monday, causing massive delays in the commuter rail service.

State police were called to the scene near the Leeland Road station about 5:20 a.m., said state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

The person, who has not been identified, was struck by a northbound train on the tracks.

Fredericksburg VRE trains were delayed up to two hours.
