Purcellville Street Work Uncovers Two More Surprise Fuel Tanks

© Leesburg Today - 07/28/2015

Crews working on Purcellville's downtown streetscape improvements project last week discovered two underground storage tanks within the right-of-way. Another previously unknown tank was found and removed last month.

The two new tanks, both long abandoned, were located July 21 on the west side of the street in front of 143 N. 21st Street. Following procedures from regulatory agencies, the town's public works staff worked with the contractor and the Virginia Department of Transportation to remove the tanks one day after their discovery.

Public Works Director Alex Vanegas said the tanks might have been used to store fuel and represented potential environmental hazards that would have gone undetected without the streetscape project.
