Smoker Blamed In Purcellville Apartment Fire

© Leesburg Today - 06/24/2015

The Loudoun County Fire Marshal's Office has determined a fire at a Dominion Terrace apartment in Purcellville yesterday was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

Fire and rescue units from Purcellville, Hamilton, Round Hill, Lovettsville and Leesburg were dispatched to the scene at 12:45 p.m. June 23. Crews found remnants of a fire on a third floor apartment balcony that had been extinguished by the automatic sprinkler system, which helped limit damage to the balcony of a single unit. Damage was estimated at $1,000.

The Department of Fire-Rescue Services reminds residents to dispose of cigarettes outside in metal or ceramic pots filled with sand, not potting soil, to soak cigarette butts and ashes in water before throwing them away, and to place the disposal containers away from the house, not on the front porch, deck or just outside a door . The containers should be cleaned frequently.
