Stackhouse Named LVC Volunteer Of The Year

Dottie Stackhouse has been selected as Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers 2015 Volunteer of the Year.

Stackhouse joined LVC in 2011.

Her work is rooted in the time she spent with her mother. ""I cared for her for two years until she passed, and her passing left a huge hole in my heart and a lot of time on my hands,"" Stackhouse stated. She scanned the Web, looking for volunteer opportunities, deciding in the end that LVC was the best fit.

It was through the organization that Stackhouse met Mamie, whom she calls ""my favorite care receiver ever."" For two years, Stackhouse took her to doctor visits and hair and beauty appointments. Often the two women would lunch together and Stackhouse found she had many similarities with her mother.

While Mamie has passed away, Stackhouse continued her work with LVC.

""I've gone on to meet many other wonderful people through my volunteer work with Caregivers and their expression of appreciation for my time is the best part,"" she said.

LVC Executive Director Susan Mandel Giblin described Stackhouse as a special and dedicated volunteer, who goes over and beyond helping clients in many of LVC's service areas. She signed up to help the elderly and disabled adults, as well as those battling long-term illness, maintain their independence by providing them with transportation, companionship and other support, according to Giblin.

The nonprofit was founded in 1995 to meet the needs of the frail elderly, disabled and adults with chronic illness. Volunteer services range from medical/dialysis transportation, grocery shopping and money management to simple visits.

""Our mission is to help vulnerable members of our community in need maintain independence and good quality of life,"" Giblin said.

Those interested in volunteering or for more information, should call 703-779-8617 or go to lvcaregivers.org.
