Supreme Court rules same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday ruled that same-sex couples across the country are entitled to the rights and privileges of marriage.

The high court's decision follows lower court rulings that overturned gay marriage bans in Virginia, Utah, Oklahoma, Indiana and Wisconsin.

The legality of gay marriage in Virginia rose to the Supreme Court last year after Prince William County Circuit Court Clerk Michele McQuigg filed an appeal in favor of upholding the ban.

The court refused to stay the state's ban on gay marriage and courts across Virginia began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in October.

In interviews last year, McQuigg said she felt it her duty as court clerk to uphold the 2006 law banning same sex marriage. But once the courts cleared the way for same sex unions, her office began issuing licenses.
