Survey says: Virginia ranks No. 1 for dog trick-or-treating

A new survey ranks Virginia as the top state in the nation for dressing up and taking our dogs trick-or-treating.

Big Heart Pet Brands (the makers of Milk-Bone and Pup-Peroni, among other treats) asked 3,000 U.S. dog owners about including their canine pals in Halloween festivities.

Virginia ranked No. 1 followed by New Jersey, Pennsylvania South Carolina and Missouri. (Maryland, in case you're wondering, didn't rank in the top 25.)

To determine the rankings, Milk-Bone and Milo's Kitchen asked pet owners if they dress up their dog in costume, take their dog trick-or-treating, or include them in a variety of other Halloween activities.

Here are the results for Virginia dog owners:

  • Dress up their dog in costume -- 64 percent
  • Greet trick-or-treaters at the door with their dog -- 43 percent
  • Give their dog extra treats during Halloween -- 57 percent
  • Take their dog to doggy parades or gatherings -- 21
  • Bring their dog trick-or-treating -- 36 percent

And, it turns out, different breeds like different treats, at least according to this survey:

  • Working Dogs -- including Dobermans and Great Danes -- prefer ""natural meat and meat jerky"" treats by 52 percent
  • Toy breeds -- including Pomeranians and pugs -- most love ""soft and chewy"" treats by 59 percent
  • Soft and chewy snacks are also the favorite treats of terriers by 58 percent and non-sporting breeds by 47 percent
  • Biscuits and crunchy treats are the top choice of hounds by 53 percent, herding dogs by 56 percent and sporting dogs by 57 percent
