Thunderstorms leave damage; power outages

A strong line of thunderstorms ripped through Northern Virginia this evening, bringing heavy rain, high winds and leaving more than 40,000 without power.

Trees and downed power lines were blocking several roads in Fairfax and Prince William Tuesday evening, most notably Va. 123 at Braddock Road near George Mason University and U.S. 1 at Mine Road in Dumfries. As of 8:30 p.m., Va. 123 was closed in both directions. In Dumfries, U.S. 1 was shut down southbound.

Dominion Virginia Power reported more than 40,000 customers without power at 8:30 p.m. In Alexandria, there were 1,756 customers out, in Arlington 3,020, in Fairfax 26,785, in Prince William 3,779 and in Stafford, 842.

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative reported 1,227 customers out in Prince William, 704 in Fairfax and 155 in Manassas Park.
