Police officers shot and wounded a 22-year-old man threatening them with a crowbar Wednesday afternoon in the Yorkshire Acres subdivision outside Manassas.

Police were called to the 7400 block of Lake Drive around 2:10 p.m. after a resident on the street reported an intruder in her yard, said Prince William police Sgt. Jonathan Perok.

The homeowner was on her back deck when her dog alerted her to ""an unknown man hiding in a bush on her property,"" Perok said.

""After a brief encounter, the man fled towards a nearby creek and the homeowner contacted police,"" he said.

Officers arrived and saw the man walking along the creek.

""The man brandished a crowbar and raised it towards the officers in a threatening manner,"" Perok said. He refused commands to drop the crowbar, at which point officers sprayed him in the face with pepper spray.

The man ran across the creek into Fairfax County with the officers in pursuit, still ordering him to stop and drop the crowbar.

""During that encounter, the man turned and, in close proximity, faced officers while raising the crowbar,"" Perok said. ""Officers fired at the man, striking him in the upper body.""

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.

No officers were injured.

Perok said the investigation continues and charges are pending.

It was the second police-involved shooting in Prince William County in little more than a month. On Aug. 18, an officer shot a man lunging at him with a knife during a domestic dispute at a home in Woodbridge. That man survived and the shooting was ruled justified.
