Briar Woods, Tuscarora hire coaches to lead football programs

A pair of Potomac District varsity football teams recently filled their head coaching vacancies.

Daniel Bruton will guide Briar Woods High School in Ashburn and a familiar face Brandon Wheelbarger will take over the Tuscarora High School program in Leesburg.

Bruton spent the last four years as head coach at Forest Park in Woodbridge, while Wheelbarger served as Tuscarora's defensive coordinator during the previous four seasons.

After leading Forest Park to pair of playoff appearances, Bruton takes the reins from Mike Groves, who served as Briar Woods interim head coach for one season.

"He has experience, enthusiasm, and is a great communicator and leader," Briar Woods athletic director Jerry Carter stated. "He is a great fit to continue the football traditions set forth by head coaches Charlie Pierce and Mike Groves."

Wheelbarger fills the void left by Michael Burnett, who resigned after guiding the Huskies to the 2017 state championship game to accept a head coaching position at Harvard-Westlake School, an independent private high school in Los Angeles.

Tuscarora athletic director Tony Tallent states that Wheelbarger "has been an integral part in creating the proud tradition that THS has built over the past 8 years."

Wheelbarger started his high school coaching career nine years ago at Freedom. He also served as defensive coordinator/associate head coach at Park View prior to Tuscarora.
