A clutch effort from a group of sophomores and freshmen led Broad Run to its first district golf tournament championship in the school's 49-year history Sept. 19 at South Riding Golf Club.

The Spartans shot a four-player total of 303 to claim the eight-team Potomac District crown, while Tuscarora sophomore Michael Brennan shot 4-under par 68 to earn individual medalist honors.

Sophomore Mason Sergi delivered a personal-best round of even par 72 to pace the Spartans. Sergi posted five birdies on the day.

Freshman Brad Freyberger produced three birdies and an eagle on his way to a round of 73 and sophomore Matthew Yun shot 1-under par through his first nine holes and finished with a round of 76.

Sophomore Hannah Jonely and freshman Sam Carollo each shot 82 to tie for Broad Run's last scoring spot. Senior Luke Goodwin (89) also competed for the Spartans.

The Spartans also placed first in the Potomac District standings during the regular season. Broad Run coach Tommy Meier praised his group, adding "This has definitely been a season of firsts."

Runner-up Rock Ridge (311) and third-place Briar Woods (314) join Broad Run in qualifying as teams for the Class 5A North Region tournament.

Brennan won the Potomac District individual title for a second straight season. Mark Spangster of Rock Ridge also shot under par, firing a 71 to finish second individually.

Sergi and John Champe's Jonah Han tied for third place with matching rounds of 72, while Freyberger and Skylar Sload of Briar Woods each shot 73 to tie for fifth place.

The 5A North Region tournament is set for Sept. 26 at Bull Run Golf Club in Haymarket.
