College Corner: Grace repeats as conference’s top soccer player

Christopher Newport University senior midfielder Jimmy Grace earned Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors in men's soccer for second consecutive year.

Grace, a Briar Woods alum, led the CAC in scoring with 14 goals and four assists (32 points) to lead Christopher Newport to the CAC regular-season title and a 14-3-1 record overall.

For his career, Grace is tied for sixth in goals (35) and tied for ninth in points (87) at CNU.

Grace is the only soccer athlete to earn multiple CAC Player of the Year accolades, in addition to collecting Rookie of the Year honors during his career.


Three locals earn MEC football honors

Shepherd University senior quarterback Connor Jessop (Broad Run) is the 2017 Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Shepherd junior receiver Wanya Allen (Potomac Falls) and West Virginia Wesleyan senior linebacker Brandon Grayson (Loudoun Valley) were selected on the second team.

Jessop, pictured above, passed for 3,532 yards and a school-record 40 touchdowns in 2017. He also rushed for 355 yards and six more touchdowns.

Allen led the Rams with 12 touchdown receptions. Overall, Allen hauled in 53 receptions for 721 yards.

Grayson recorded 99 tackles in his senior season for the Bobcats. He also produced two sacks, forced a fumble, recovered three fumbles and secured an interception.


Cross joins Tribe track and field team

Tuscarora High School alum George Cross V has been selected to compete on William & Mary's track and field team for the 2017-2018 season.

Cross, shown here playing basketball for Tuscarora, holds the Huskies' record (45 feet, 3 inches) in the triple jump.

He was the Sportsman of the Year for Tuscarora basketball in 2015-2016 and received the Iron Husky award for Huskies' boys track and field in 2016.

Cross is a member of the National Honor Society, French National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars.


Smith earns freshman football honor

Campbell University redshirt freshman quarterback Daniel Smith is the Pioneer Football League’s Freshman Offensive Player of the Year.

Smith, a Tuscarora alum, racked up 1,269 rushing yards and 3,158 yards of total offense in 2017.

He led all FCS rushers with 9.13 yards per carry, while ranking second in yardage per game (126.9).

Smith had six 100-yard rushing performances during the season, including a 289-yard outing at Davidson that earned him NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Offensive Player of the Week honors.
