Dolphins show the way in ODSL All-Star meet

For the Spring Lakes Dolphins, the Old Dominion Swim League All-Star meet July 28 at Belmont Country Club was a family affair.

The Dolphins, based out of Spring Lakes in Leesburg, were led to their third consecutive All-Star title by not one, but two sibling pairs: Damon and Kayleigh Rosenburg and Reese and Kassidy Borden.

The Bordens competed in the younger age groups, with Reese finishing second in the girls 7-8 25 meter backstroke and 8 and under 25 breaststroke and Kassidy finishing fourth in the 9-10 50 meter backstroke, second in the 9-10 50 breastroke and fifth in the 100 individual medley.

The Rosenburgs, a long-time mainstay in Loudoun swimming, dominated in the upper age groups. Damon, a swimmer at Denison University in Ohio, took first in every event he entered, winning medals in the 15-18 50 free, 50 breast and 100 IM. Kaleigh, a rising senior at Heritage High School, took first in the 50 free and 100 IM and second in the 50 breast.

“For the older age groups, we turn to Damon and Kaleigh Rosenburg,” said Luke Trafton, coach of the Spring Lake Dolphins.

Trafton is new to the Loudoun swim scene, having moved this past year from Maine to coach at SNOW Swimming.

“The Dolphins kind of fell onto my lap,” Trafton said. “I heard they were undefeated the last two seasons. Not a whole lot of room for error.”

Despite the Dolphins being a Division “C” team based on their small size (Division A is for the largest teams and Division D is for the smallest), they surpassed the runner-up Lansdowne Lightning by 28.5 points with a total score of 416.5.

“What we lack in numbers, we make up for with kids that work hard, come to practice and rarely miss meets,” Trafton said.

But Spring Hill wasn’t the only team that boasted impressive swimmers at ODSL’s final event of the summer.

Lenah Run Froggers posted seven first-place finishes, the most of any team.

Ten swimmers from seven teams posted multiple first-place finishes, and 27 ODSL records were broken.

The first place finishes in the girls 9-10 age group were split between Lovettesville’s Sofia Davis and Lenah Run’s Lauren Rubino. Rubino finished first in both the 50 free, barely touching the wall before Allison Kopac, and the 50 back. Davis took the 50 breast and 50 fly. Both girls competed in the 100 IM, with Davis besting Rubino by a little over four seconds.

“She’s got a lot of talent and she is so committed to improving her swimming, getting stronger, making all the strokes better,” said Jacob Mason, coach of the Lovettesville Dolphins. “She’s so focused as just a ten year old, and that combined with a lot of physical ability has done her well.”

Woodlea Manor’s Cody Hughes dominated in the 11-12 boys age group, breaking the ODSL record in all three of the events he competed in. Like Hughes, Kylie Jordan of Red Rocks broke record in all three of her events.

The 13-14 boys was primarily a battle between Potomac Crossing’s Simon Shi and Joaquin Gabriel of Stone Ridge. Both boys won two events a piece, with Shi taking Gabriel in the 100 IM and Gabriel narrowly defeating Shi in the 50 breast.

Overall, 35 kids from 18 squads earned top finishes at the 26-team event. Full meet results: 2012_ODSL_All_Star_Meet_Results.pdf
