Loudoun fencers compete in national championships

Loudoun International Fencing Club qualified 21 fencers in at least one event for the 2017 National Fencing Championships & July Challenge, held July 1-10 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Loudoun fencers Sammy Lu, Colin Trimmer, Michaela Joyce, Isaac Piccus, Shibli Nomani, Ethan Kim, Elizabeth Boyer, Rohan Valluri, Sofia Alii and Maria Papadopoulos participated in a total of 21 events during the 10-day competition.

Recent Stone Bridge High School graduate Maria Papadopoulos placed eighth among 82 fencers in the Division 1A Women’s Epee Championship at the 2017 National Fencing Championships. Papadopoulos, with Loudoun International Fencing Club head coach Ilya Lobanenkov, also finished 31st out of 193 competitors in the Junior Women’s Epee.
