Loudoun County High School senior Sophie Newton signed her letter of intent May 8 to continue her swimming career at Rutgers University, a Division I program in New Jersey.

Newton enjoyed an outstanding swim career for the Raiders. She holds six individual records and was part of three relay teams that set school-record times. Newton also swam for the Curl Burke Swim Club the last two years and was named a USA Swimming Academic All-American.

“Sophie has the potential to do great things in our program. She is an up-and-coming swimmer with her best swimming ahead of her as a Scarlet Knight,” Rutgers coach Phil Spiniello stated.

“Her strength in the butterfly and sprint free events helped her club team capture the NCSA Junior National title this spring. We look forward to seeing her blossom as a successful collegiate athlete here at RU.”

Rutgers competes in the Big East Conference.
