Group of Wolverines ready to excel at next level

Battista wins title, Spartans take second at 5A state tourney

Down five points quickly in the VHSL Group 5A 160-pound state championship bout Feb. 20 at Robinson Secondary School, Broad Run's Michael Battista fought off a pin attempt and began to battle back.

Dominion’s Atariwa stands atop podium at VHSL 4A wrestling tourney

Junior Adeeb Atariwa became Dominion High School's first-ever state champion wrestler in dominant fashion Feb. 20 at the Virginia High School League Group 4A Wrestling Championships in Salem.

Friday’s updated postseason schedule

Virginia High School League state swimming, wrestling and gymnastics meets highlight Friday's full slate of varsity athletic events. Conference 21 and Conference 28 basketball tournament championship games are also set for tonight.

VHSL state wrestling tournaments condensed to one-day events

The Virginia High School League State Wrestling Championships for all classifications have been condensed from two-day events to one day due to the weather forecast for Saturday. Group 1A through 6A tournaments are now scheduled to begin and conclude on Friday.

Woodgrove edges Sherando for Conference 21 wrestling crown

The first 195 matches of the day were not enough to decide a team champion at the Conference 21 Wrestling Championships Feb. 7 at Woodgrove High School in Purcellville. The point totals of Sherando and the homestanding Wolverines were too close to call.

Six local wrestlers win Conference 28 titles

John Champe High School produced four individual champions on its way to a third-place team finish at the 3A Conference 28 Wrestling Championships Feb. 7 at Rock Ridge High School in Ashburn.

Broad Run breaks through at Conference 14 wrestling meet

The last time Broad Run High School was the team champion of a district wrestling meet, the year was 1995. "Toy Story" was hot in theaters, people were learning about something called email and no one on today's Spartans had yet been born.

Varsity rewind: Feb. 5-7 events

Broad Run High School won the 5A Conference 14 wrestling championship on Friday evening. Woodgrove High School followed suit by claiming the 4A Conference 21 wrestling championship on Saturday.
