New Mocatinas dessert house to open on Market Street in Leesburg

Unique French pastries served with a hot cup of coffee or tea will be the theme at a new “specialty dessert house” at 3 E. Market St. in Leesburg, just across from the county courthouse.

Owner Monica Pindell created the concept, called Mocatinas, over the past year after leaving her corporate career. She was looking at the next phase in her life where she could do something creative and entrepreneurial. As a baker, she started a cookie design business and began to dream of ways to build a bigger company with brick and mortar space.

After signing the lease for the Leesburg space in October, she expects to open for business in the 2,800-square-foot building in mid-January.

Located in the former Loudoun County public defenders' office, the two-level brick-facade building is being completely renovated to have a “light and airy” feel with a pink and gray color scheme. Customers will be greeted with a large, crystal chandelier hanging in the entry foyer.

Inside, the professional-grade kitchen will be churning out pastries including Pindell's favorite – French macarons, a sweet meringue-based confection. The menu will include a variety of pastries -- both nut-free and gluten-free -- ice cream, candy and chocolate from around the world.

There will also be a gift shop area selling unique brands that Pindell has sourced from her travels.

“We want to provide Loudoun with brands they don't normally see here,” she said.

Local artisans will have opportunities to be featured at Mocatinas, as well.

“We want to bring awareness to the great talent we have in this area,” Pindell said.

There will be comfortable seating areas throughout the space, including a private room upstairs to host parties, corporate meetings, team building classes and educational workshops.

Pindell plans to invite local wineries for wine and chocolate pairing events.

“What better together than chocolate and wine?” she said.

The name Mocatinas comes from her childhood nickname, and Pindell felt it went perfectly with this concept.

“Our goal is to create an entire dessert house. If you are looking for somewhere to go after dinner, this is the spot," she said.
