Volunteers for the 81st annual Inova Ladies Board Rummage Sale are putting the finishing touches on this year's event, set for this weekend at Morven Park Equestrian Center at 41580 Sunday Morning Lane in Leesburg.
The rummage sale, which features 55,000 square feet of shopping, kicks off Saturday with early bird shopping at 8 a.m. for $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Free regular admission runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
Shoppers can find a wide array of merchandise, ranging from antiques, collectibles, books, furniture, clothing and accessories for the entire family, tools, sports and exercise equipment, small appliances, household items and décor, designer labels, electronics, holiday items, jewelry and toys.
New this year is an expanded furniture department with an outdoor living tent featuring patio sets and more than 100 terracotta pots. The silent auction is also back, and the children's department has been expanded.
Event co-chairs Megan O'Brien and Joylyn Hannahs say they put in the long hours because they want to keep the community tradition alive.
"There is so much positive energy and community spirit among the volunteers. So, when this opportunity came up, Megan and I looked at each other and said, 'Yes, we love a challenge,'" said Hannahs.
The women also believe it is an opportunity to contribute to the community for the benefit of the local hospital.
"The sale is important in so many ways. It allows our community to give back by donating not with money but with their unwanted items, and to know that the sale of their items – which are no longer going to the landfill – will go directly to the hospital's greatest needs and to fund nursing scholarships," O'Brien said.
