Jay J. Brown, president of the Arcola Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, died Wednesday morning at Inova Loudoun Hospital.
Brown, amiably addressed as J.J. by friends and colleagues, was AVFRD president since January 2016 and the former deputy chief of EMS Training for Loudoun County Fire and Rescue, according to AVFRD officials.
“In addition to the countless hours he has put in helping keep our station running, Mr. Brown had many impressive accomplishments in Fire-Rescue, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Management, and Program Management during his career that spanned over 45 years,” an online announcement says.
Brown received two Virginia Governor’s Awards for transportation safety programs and was named Outstanding Emergency Medical Services Administrator for Northern Virginia in 2006.
“His extensive experience with both fire and EMS, his connections with so many people in the industry locally and outside Loudoun, and his tireless work ethic even in a volunteer status made him uniquely qualified to run our Department,” the announcement says. “He will be sorely missed, and cannot be replaced.”
Brown’s cause of death was not immediately known or disclosed by fire and rescue officials.
