Daily COVID-19 cases for past 90 days

This graph shows the amount of new cases reported daily in Loudoun County for the 90 days ending Tuesday. Loudoun County reported 346 new cases Tuesday, which marks the fifth most new cases reported on a single day in the county since the pandemic began.

Amid a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in Loudoun County, Dr. David Goodfriend, director of the health department, said Tuesday he believes the omicron variant is “very likely” already spreading in the county.

The omicron variant, which was first detected in Northern Virginia on Dec. 9, now accounts for 73% of all cases in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Our expectation is that the omicron variant is here,” he said Tuesday in an interview with the Times-Mirror.

Goodfriend said that since laboratory analysis of positive COVID-19 test samples take about two weeks to complete, Loudoun County doesn’t yet have data confirming the variant’s presence in the community.

Tuesday’s COVID-19 case data from the Virginia Department of Health indicates that Loudoun’s 7-day average number of new daily cases reported per 100,000 residents was 53.2. In contrast, the rest of Virginia’s 7-day average of new daily cases was 42 infections per 100,000 population.

The 346 new cases reported on Tuesday amount to the fifth-most reported on a single day in Loudoun County since the pandemic began, according to Virginia Department of Health data.

Christopher Chiantella, the chief medical officer at Inova Loudoun Hospital in Landsowne, said the hospital is seeing an increasing trend in the number of patients undergoing treatment for COVID-19.

The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 varies day-to-day, he said. While he would not provide the exact number of people being treated for the disease, he said the number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 was around the mid-teens to 20s.

“The numbers are higher than they’ve been in a while,” Chiantella said.

He said Inova saw two previous peaks — one in May 2020, and another in January 2021 — which numbered in the 40s and 60s. The majority of those who are now hospitalized for the virus are unvaccinated, he said.

“We’re concerned about the upcoming holidays and possible exposure,” he said.

“The omicron [variant] is more contagious than the previous variants,” Chiantella said. “That means that every one person who’s sick is going to infect that many more people.”

Inova’s chief medical officer encouraged all eligible residents to obtain a vaccination or booster shot against COVID-19, as well as a flu shot. He also stressed the importance of wearing masks indoors, maintaining distance from others and practicing diligent hand washing to slow the spread of the new variant.

It’s a sorry lot who read the latest daily COVID numbers with much more than a yawn.

Omicron is a dud. It’s practically a head cold. That’s the general trend of viruses. They mutate into a weaker but more infectious strain.

Fewer than 1 in 50 people with confirmed Omicron cases are being hospitalized in South Africa where Omicron was first reported to the World Health Organization on Nov 24. That means that the actual hospitalization rate is far lower than that since many people with Omicron have such mild cases that they won’t even bother to be tested.

But I know, let’s track the 7-day average of new COVID cases in Virginia! Let’s compare the number of daily new COVID cases in Loudoun County with previous highs!

No, let’s not. That's just promoting irrational fear. Surely there is something else more interesting to report on.

And let’s stop pushing the vaccine and boosters. We don’t need to be boosted for what amounts to catching a cold. Especially when there is a significant risk of getting myocarditis and other heart problems from COVID vaccines and booster shots, particularly if you’re a teen or young adult.

And let’s vote government officials out of office who mandate vaccines and booster shots at the risk of losing your job. That’s just a blatant grab for autocratic control of your life using fear as the means to convince you to give up your freedom.
