In response to the recent news that Purcellville Town Attorney Sally Hankins has been placed on administrative leave, Loudoun County Supervisor Tony Buffington, R-Blue Ridge, condemned the mayor and town council for their actions over the past few months in a post on social media.
“Yet another example of what I believe to be a dysfunctional Mayor and majority on the Purcellville Town Council,” Buffington said about Hankins being placed on paid leave.
“Depending on how the Council handles this, I could easily envision a multi-million dollar settlement being paid out to Town Attorney, Hankins,” he said.
He noted recent staff departures as well as the loss of the planned park and ride lot at Fields Farm which “will result in the County having to return millions in previously awarded state transportation funding (this hurts the County’s chances of being awarded state transportation funding in the future — Loudoun relies heavily on this funding); lost commuter bus service to Purcellville which will result in more Rt 7, Purcellville Main Street, and Hamilton Main Street traffic; caused the County to cancel planned construction of a new 2nd entrance to Woodgrove H.S. (we will see if LCPS wants to try its hand at working with the Town to take this project over); caused the County to relocate its planned project to build more Parks and Rec sports fields for western Loudoun and the Town to a new location outside of Town boundaries; caused major delays to the County’s planned construction of the new Rt7/Rt 690 Interchange project which may now have to move forward without the planned eastbound exit from Rt 7 onto Rt 690 and will subsequently result in delays to the County’s planned Rt7/Rt 287 Improvement project; resigned from its seat on the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority’s (NVTA), Planning Subcommittee; lost its opportunity for the Town Mayor to become a sitting member of the actual NVTA who awards billions in state transportation funding to localities each year, by not responding with interest to the email offer; refusal to hold a state mandated Special Election to properly fill a seat on the Town’s Council, until agreeing to do so “under protest” after being sued over it by two members of the Town’s own Council; and who knows what else. These are just a few off the top of my head,” Buffington wrote.
“As a resident of the Town, I’m astonished by the lack of common sense decision making by the Mayor and his majority on Town Council. That being said, I should acknowledge Councilwomen Erin Rayner and Mary Jane Williams for having opposed most of these actions by their colleagues,” he said.
