Conservative firebrand Corey Stewart will take on incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine (D) after claiming the Republican nomination for this November's U.S. Senate race on Tuesday.
Stewart narrowly defeated state Del. Nick Freitas by approximately 6,000 votes out of more than 300,000 case in today's statewide GOP primary. With 96 percent of precincts reporting, Stewart led 45 percent to 43 percent. Minister E.W. Jackson held 12 percent.
Stewart is closely aligned with President Donald Trump, serving as a Trump campaign chairman in Virginia during the 2016 cycle.
Kaine was not challenged for the Democratic primary.
