The Loudoun Times-Mirror has named Graham Cullen its new editor-in-chief.
Cullen has spent the better part of two decades as a multimedia professional in the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia region.
He started off interning for the Frederick News-Post in Maryland during his undergraduate studies in photography at Shepherd University in West Virginia.
After graduating, he joined The News-Post photo department full-time as an assistant in 2006, graduating to staff photographer nine months later.
He spent the next 14 years collaborating with fellow staffers to make robust reporting packages and, in 2016, helped launch The News-Post’s podcast network, later becoming director of multimedia in 2019.
While working at the News-Post, Cullen began teaching a journalism course at Shepherd and later at Hood College in Frederick.
In 2015, he began working toward a masters degree at the University of Maryland, College Park’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism, where he currently teaches photography courses. He is currently researching his masters thesis, which seeks to study the potential disconnect between photojournalists and the editors who selectively utilize their photographs to shape a narrative.
Cullen said supporting others in attaining their professional goals is one of his “natural inclinations,” which led to his work in education.
“In my role as editor, I now get to do that on a regular basis — supporting a small, but dedicated team here at the Times-Mirror as we cover this diverse and growing community,” he said.
Cullen added, “It’s my hope that readers continue to engage with us so that we can best report on this dynamic community.”
Outside the newsroom and the classroom, Cullen enjoys spending time with his three children and engaging in various outdoor activities; he likes to garden, hike, run marathons and the very occasional 50K.
Cullen succeeds Trevor Baratko, who accepted the news editor position at The Frederick News-Post in late 2020 and has been serving both publications since. The Times-Mirror and News-Post are both publications of Ogden Newspapers.
