Sterling fire // 1-15-20

A fire engulfs a barn in Sterling on Jan. 15.

The Loudoun County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating two fires in the Sterling area in the past 10 days, both of which have been classified as incendiary or arson, according to Loudoun County Fire and Rescue.

Units from Sterling, Ashburn, Kincora, Moorefield, Fairfax County and the Loudoun Fire Marshal's Office responded to 45781 Maries Rd. around 10 p.m.

Responders found the onsite structure — a barn that had been abandoned and subsequently used for storage — completely engulfed in flames, while witnesses reported an explosion having occurred.

Firefighters instigated a rapid exterior attack and subdued the fire quickly, later determining the reported explosion had resulted from abandoned items in the barn, officials said.

The site of the Jan. 15 fire was right next to the location of a similar fire on Jan. 10, leading authorities to suggest the two might be related.

According to Fire and Rescue, authorities have identified and interviewed suspects and are continuing to investigate.

The Fire Marshal's Office is requesting anyone with video or photos from either fire contact the office at 703-737-8600 or dutyfm@loudoun.gov.
