Former President Jimmy Carter

Former President Jimmy Carter

A guitar signed by the Rolling Stones, vacations to Hawaii, France and Martha’s Vineyard and signed photographs of five U.S. presidents are among the items former President Jimmy Carter will be auctioning off at his foundation’s annual charity benefit, held this year at Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports The Carter Center’s auction will take place Saturday as part of a five-day retreat at the resort for the center’s supporters. Proceeds from the wide-ranging offerings will go toward efforts to advance global peace and health care.

The newspaper reports that the event pulled in $3.5 million from bidders last year. The highest bid went to “Rachel and Cotton,” an original 2016 oil painting made by President Carter.

Carter, 94, grew up in Plains, Georgia. He served as the nation's 39th president from 1977 through 1980.

Please, go back to building houses and stay out of politics. I remember the "misery index" and how he let our great American's suffer in Iran for 444 days. Watching the Socialist debates the last few nights would bring us back to those insufferable days.

amerigirl

He's not in politics, what do you mean? It's for charity not a political fundraiser.

You didn't hear Carter's speech, it was purely political, exactly along party lines, cut down Trump, lie, and hate. He was being the good little socialist.

Jeanne T

So if you're not in politics you can't do anything political??

amerigirl

Got to agree with Jeanie, You don't need to be a politician or an ex-pol to speak up about you political ideas. All most everyone who posts here does that whether it is warranted or not. This article is not about him speaking out, it is about him doing great work to help the underprivileged and to blast him for doing such a good deed is absurd.

Can you imagine a Democrat who is against killing babies winning a national election today?

LoudounPulse

Southern Democrats no longer exist. They died out a decade or two ago. Today's Democrats are Urban Coastal coffee drinkers who believe the Government should pay for everything, because getting a job and earning money is too much work and gets in the way of playing candy crush.

amerigirl

If you don't have a job you can't pay for your coffee. You have a very strange perspective on Democrats. So funny, one of my republican friends asked me about a week ago if I had ever played candy crush or friends, nope, and have no interest.

When most of their money is inherited, you don't need a job. That's why they feel so guilty and want to give everyone elses money away.

Jimmy, the progressive's progressive, the President with the highest inflation rate in the history of the his country, even beat out the Great Depression.

amerigirl

Sure just pick on someone doing charity work. I want that guitar!

workhardgetahead

Amerigirl, we finally agree. The Stones are the greatest. I want the guitar!!

He wasn't doing charity work in Lansdowne, he was happy to jump into politics. Watch the video. He's fair game. Again, go back to building houses.

I prefer a good mattress over a hard road anytime

Since a key element of an economic depression is a negative inflation rate I would hope that all presidents strive for an inflation rate higher than during the Great Depression.

amerigirl

[offtopic] What does that have to do with someone raising money for a charity. Shame on you for wanting to bash him for something when he is doing a great thing, How many other 94 year old people are out there still trying to do good for less advantaged people? He should be thanked for all his work as president he had an increase of nearly eight million jobs and a decrease in the budget deficit. But after his presidency he has done some remarkable work. His work with Habitat for Humanity where he has helped build over 4,000 homes for people in need.

The term STAGFLATION was an unusual occurance where you had stagenation in the ecomomy and almost hyperinflation at the same time. Your statement could be true, but not aways, inflation and deflation can have negatve effects and positive effects. It can affect unemployment, both up and down. Most of the measures are interdependent and results of what you are trying to measure are not always accurate. If everything was black and wite and absolute, Economists would be out of work.

The highest year-over-year inflation rate was 29.78 percent in 1778. In the period of time since the introduction of the CPI, the highest inflation rate observed was 19.66 percent in 1917. Jimmy Carter may be old but he was definitely not president then. You forgot to mention that when he took office the country was already in stagflation, (yes it’s a real word), in fact he was credited for strong growth despite recessions (one in 1980 and another in 1981-1982). His GDP was still higher than both Bush’s and Nixon.

swampfiller

The US didn't exist until after 1778. CARTER WAS 21% at his highest. Stagnation is a word coined back then to describe his econoimic policies and lack of growth. Which shows that DDP is not alwaysna good measure of breal growth or lack thereof. The base basket of goods and services which defines the GDP is not the same as it is for you and me, our children, and there children. Each age class has different needs. My mainn need is medical

[spam][spam][spam] Defending Carter's economic performance is like defending Governor Coonman's racism.

workhardgetahead

Stick with guitars

workhardgetahead

Stagflation, sounds like the last 4 years of Obama
