Dominique Callins was appointed to the Virginia Court of Appeals.

Dominique Callins, an attorney with Leesburg firm Simms Showers LLP, has been appointed to the Virginia Court of Appeals, according to the minutes from a General Assembly meeting.

Lawmakers appointed Callins, who lives in Front Royal and works in Loudoun County, and several other future judges during the second special session, which concluded last week.

“I was both elated and humbled upon being notified last week that I was being nominated to sit on the Virginia Court of Appeals,” Callins said in an email to the Times-Mirror. “I am so honored to be selected by the General Assembly from among many impressive individuals.”“I believe in the appellate courts as part of both the symbolic and practical path to justice,” she said. “The recent changes in the court’s jurisdiction signify the importance of the Virginia Court of Appeals in representing justice. The extension of appellate rights assures the hope of justice, and that hope solidifies confidence in our judicial system. I am excited to be a part of this historic transition.”

As the leader of Simms Showers, LLP’s Family Law Section, Callins has been practicing in northern Virginia for 13 years, her bio states. Her career started as a judicial law clerk for the Henrico County Circuit Court and later for the Honorable James W. Benton (Ret.), of the Court of Appeals of Virginia.

Callins received a B.A. from Florida A&M University, and a J.D. from the College of William and Mary, Marshall-Wythe School of Law.

Her practice areas include marital separation, contested divorce, spousal and child support, high net-worth asset division, domestic and international child custody and visitation, pre/post marital agreements, intra-family adoption and family/domestic assault matters.

Callins is on the board of the Ryan Bartel Foundation, an active member of Gateway Community Church in South Riding, a member of the George Mason University School of Business, Women in Business Initiative (WIBI) Board and supporter of The Leadership Center — a leadership school dedicated to developing future women leaders of Honduras.

Callins said she aims to take the bench on November 1, with the oath of office being taken sometime prior to her start.Lawmakers approved the following appointments:
