More than 500 volunteers at JK Community Farm in Purcellville helped plant 50,000 seedlings over the weekend which will provide about 100,000 meals to local people in need of assistance, according to the farm’s Executive Director Samantha Kuhn.
“The food pantries let us know what types of produce they use the most,” Kuhn said. “We expect to donate 245,000 pounds of food this year. At the end of this season, we will reach one million pounds since we started.”
Richard Chacon and John Ross were part of a group of 17 volunteers from Grid Networks at the event on Friday who dug holes and planted rows of bell peppers, tomatoes, corn and watermelon.
“This is really cool. When our company decided to do volunteer days, we wanted to help. It’s also great for team building and all for an amazing cause,” Ross said.
Other companies represented on Friday included Splunk, Farm Credit of Virginia, Lindsey Business Solutions and TD Bank. In addition to planting seedlings, the event raises funds to help offset the costs at the farm, Kuhn said.
This was the 5th annual plant-a-thon for the nonprofit which launched in 2018 on a 150-acre farm purchased by Chuck and Stacy Kuhn which has been placed in conservation easement. Each year the program continues to grow and the farm produces more and more food for the community.
In its first year, the farm donated 50,000 pounds of produce and the number of volunteers has increased substantially as well, Kuhn said, with thousands of people participating in the project throughout the year.
The farm donates food to its nonprofit partners which include Loudoun Hunger Relief, Food for Others, Arlington Food Assistance Center and DC Central Kitchen.
