After announcing the closure of Loudoun County Public Schools amid the COVID-19 pandemic on Thursday, LCPS Superintendent Eric Williams said the division planned to continue supporting students who rely on school meals due to food insecurity.

LCPS began fulfilling that goal the next day, preparing 1,000 breakfasts and 1,500 lunches to be served at school buildings, division officials told the Times-Mirror.

The free meal service expanded Monday, when School Nutrition Services delivered 6,400 meals to 263 stops around the county via a fleet of 75 school buses for those who could not visit a school facility. Officials say these routes cover 667 miles throughout Loudoun.

According to an LCPS release, school-based meal service will be provided from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday this week and next to accommodate the two-week closure period Gov. Ralph Northam (D) imposed Friday.

Each student will be allowed a breakfast and a lunch during that period, and they can choose to take both meals simultaneously.

Williams assisted with meal preparation and bus loading at Broad Run High School in Ashburn Monday starting at 7 a.m.

Don't call them free meals they are taxpayer funded.

Why isn't Loudoun worried about the employees that serve this food to hundreds of people? Perhaps the employees have "virus insecurity." All of these programs should be suspended immediately.

Yes we should let kids suffer from starvation not the virus. Do you know how the food is distributed?

delivering meals is a good solution. Much better than having all the contact as they are being picked up.
