Local residents have once again organized a grassroots effort to raise funds to pay down all local children’s school meal debt.
In Loudoun County, the public school system provide free and reduced meals to 17.5% of students – more than 14,000 meals – spread throughout more than 90 schools.
Still, meal debt campaign organizers say there are a number of students whose families do not qualify for free or reduced meals because they are slightly over the income level.
So for the third year local citizens and businesses are working to reduce the meal debt incurred by students and their families. Residents can support the effort by visiting Loudouneducationfoundation.org/generaldonation.html to donate. Add “School Meal Donation” in the comments section. Donations are tax deductible. Checks, meanwhile, can be made out to the Loudoun Education Foundation and sent to: Loudoun Education Foundation, 21000 Education Court, Ashburn, VA 20148.
All funds raised by the campaign will go toward reducing student meal debt. Organizers have been able to cancel all student meal debt in the previous two years. This year the debt stood at $80,000 at the beginning of April.
