The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating a single-vehicle crash that reportedly took place near the intersection of Route 15 and Montresor Road in Leesburg Friday morning.
LCSO officials said a deputy was running RADAR in the area around 1 a.m. and observed an SUV traveling north on Route 15 well in excess of the posted speed limit.
The deputy reportedly turned onto the roadway to initiate a traffic stop but lost sight of the vehicle.
After continuing on Route 15, the deputy discovered that the driver had crashed into a utility pole near Montresor Road and the vehicle had caught fire.
The deputy doused the flames with a fire extinguisher, and the driver — the only occupant of the crashed vehicle — was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.
Any witnesses of the crash who have not already spoken to law enforcement are asked to contact Investigator S. Allen with the LCSO Crash Reconstruction Unit at 703-777-1021.
