Middleburg resident celebrates 100th birthday today

Middleburg resident Ada “Alise” Berry Cook was born on Feb. 22, 1921.

A lifelong resident of Loudoun County celebrated her 100th birthday Monday after a drive-by celebration with friends and family on Sunday at her home in Middleburg.

Ada “Alise” Berry Cook was born on Feb. 22, 1921, and is the fourth of 10 children of the late John E. Berry Sr. and Charlotte Washington Berry. She is the only survivor of her siblings.

Cook says she has enjoyed living in Loudoun County for 100 years. She notes many changes over the past century, including the increased use of automobiles, improved power and electricity, the widespread use of cell phones and the internet.

Cook said the other significant change is regarding racial equity and equality, though she believes there is a long way to go for true equality.

Cook credits her good health and longevity to having positive relationships throughout her life.

Her advice is to “always be yourself and trust and treat others as you want to be treated.”

She graduated from the Loudoun Training School in 1940 and remained in Leesburg until she married Robert Cook in 1948, when she moved to Middleburg.

Cook worked at Homewood Farm in Middleburg for 25 years. In addition to cooking, she formerly loved to sew and made dresses for her four granddaughters.

A highlight in her life was traveling to Europe in 1989 with her sister, Edna Evans, and niece, Barbara Scott.
