A Lightridge High School staffer witnessed a co-worker assault a special education student twice on Nov. 11, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
In the first incident, school behavioral assistant Julie D. Hancher allegedly pushed the boy with both hands, causing him to fall to the ground, according to Detective Shannon M. Shelow’s criminal complaint.
“The victim is autistic and non-verbal and was not causing any behavioral issues at the time of the assault,” Shelow wrote in the complaint which was released in Loudoun Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Tuesday. “The incident was reported by Hancher’s co-worker who witnessed the incident.”
In the second incident, the co-worker told authorities she heard a thud and then saw the student’s head against the wall. “Julie said, ‘You didn’t see that,’” Shelow wrote.
The incidents were reported to Lightridge’s school resource officer on Nov. 14. On Nov. 22, Hancher, 55, of Leesburg, was charged with two counts of assault and battery. She is scheduled to be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 8.
Hancher, who was hired in 2008 and earns $45,665 annually, wouldn’t comment on Nov. 22. She was placed on administrative leave on Nov. 15, according to LCPS spokesman Wayde B. Byard. He previously said LCPS is fully cooperating with the investigation.
