Two Sterling students were among the six Washington D.C. metro students selected for the Student Reporting Labs Homegrown Fellowship, PBS Students Reporting Labs and WETA recently announced.
Dominion junior and DHS Press Editor-in-Chief Morgan Fischer was selected as the team leader and producer. Fellow junior and DHS Press producer Alison Pataky was selected as producer and camera operator.
The goal of this initiative is to give schools local to WETA in Arlington an opportunity to connect with each other and receive mentorship from public media professionals while doing a deep dive into a newsworthy current event or issue in their community. WETA is the local leading public broadcasting station in the nation's capital, serving Virginia, Maryland and D.C.
This year’s initiative will explore opportunity in America by examining issues of economic security and hardship. The prompt is aligned with PBS’ "Chasing the Dream." The final video package will be published as part of the "Opportunity in America" series in spring 2019, PBS officials said.
Fellows have the opportunity to develop journalism and video production skills and connect with other students who are passionate about storytelling. Fellows will work as a team under the mentorship of Associate Producer Kristy Choi, Producer Briget Ganske and Digital Associate Producer Rawan Elbaba to produce one news package for Student Reporting Labs’ spring series.
“Morgan and Alison are outstanding young journalists who have an incredible work ethic and integrity. I am excited to see how much they will learn through this incredible opportunity and am so thankful for all that working with PBS SRL has brought to our school,” DHS Press sponsor and teacher Mitch Schwartz said in a statement.
Dominion has been working with PBS SRL since 2018. Their piece "Tiny Coders" aired on NewsHour on April 10, 2018.
