A Purcellville teacher has been selected as one of five participants in C-SPAN’s 2020 Teacher Fellowship Program.
C-SPAN announced on Tuesday that Patti Benalayat, a teacher at Blue Ridge Middle School, will collaborate with C-SPAN’s Education Relations team for four weeks to create content for C-SPAN Classroom, a free online teaching resource for educators.
Benalayat teaches eighth grade civics/economics and has previously taught English Language Learners in kindergarten through eighth grade in Loudoun County. She is a Google Certified Educator, has led school-based training in using digital tools to enhance instruction and has presented at Inspire Loudoun, a county-based professional development conference.
Benalayat established the We the People Simulated Congressional Hearings program at Blue Ridge Middle School.
In its 27th year, C-SPAN’s Fellowship Program selects teachers to partner with the Education Relations team to create new content for the upcoming school year. This summer, due to COVID-19, the four-week, in-person experience has shifted to a virtual platform where educators will develop project ideas to feature on the C-SPAN Classroom website.
Each fellow was selected by a panel of C-SPAN representatives and evaluated on their innovative use of C-SPAN programming in their curriculum, commitment to professional development and creative use of technology and social platforms, according to C-SPAN representatives. Each fellow will receive $1,000 for participating in the program, which will be held July 6 to July 31.
