State Department

A State Department official who lives in Leesburg and is alleged to have been active with white supremacist groups has been placed on leave, according to media reports.

Thirty-eight-year-old Matthew Q. Gebert, believed to be a foreign affairs officer at the Bureau of Energy Resources, allegedly hosted white nationalist forums and events at his Leesburg home, according to a report from the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Politico and NBC News reported on Thursday that Gebert had been placed on leave.

The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch posted about Gebert on Wednesday.

SPLC-- US's biggest hate group. That's all we need to know. Zero validity.

amerigirl

You don't know the truth than do you? They watch and report the haters.

scottva

LTM - Can you make it any more difficult to track comments? There are (55) comments here and the dates of the posts are all over the place. Vote Trump in 2020 your other options are beyond shameful

LoudounLearner

My first thought on reading this article was WOW! This is happening in my neighborhood! Then I read the comments! WOW! What type of person's first reaction to this article is to immediately defend the White Supremacist?!?! So sorry to see that willful ignorance (there are things called Google and Alexa) and hate live near me.

scottva

@LoudounLearner - So I guess you feel the same way about black nationalists and black supremacists?

lylehm

I loathe the KKK, neo-nazis, BLM, or any group that has hate as a core tenant.

However, once we begin stripping away peoples' 1st amendment rights, how long is it until your own voice is silenced?

amerigirl

They have a right to talk, protest like in Charlottesville, What they don't have is the right of someone who represents the US government promoting hatred and saying that he wants to eliminate the people of color in this country and make it a place for white people. He took an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States and he has broken that oath.

scottva

@amerigirl - Do you have any idea how many black nationalists work in the US government? Any idea how many politicians broken their oath to the Constitution?

DavisB

how has his right to speak been violated? He is as free to spread his hate as anyone else here.

drymillrd

It is unfortunate that there are a few people in this comment section that are quick and careless to judge other people making comments of being racist/white nationalists/white supremacists, with little if any evidence. I guess if you need to feel you are more righteous, that is what you do. It's not helpful though, and it ultimately provides a pass to those who really do subscribe to the white supremacy ideology (if everyone is a racist then no one is really a racist). But I think what concerns most about this story (beyond the ideology) is who will be next to be called out by the media and the mob? Heck, even a sitting congressman published (on Twitter) a list of donors to the president along with their workplace with the expressed purpose that they should "think twice" about contributing again to the president's campaign. Many of these donors are now receiving death threats. So much for free speech. So much for privacy. Again, who gets called out next? And for what? And to what end does this take us as a nation?

amerigirl

Righteousness isn’t the deal here, and doesn’t deserve the attention. Castro’s tweet is public information, anyone can look up his or any politicians’ donors. Those people/corporations do not have a right to privacy when they support a certain politician’s campaign, just as I don’t if I contribute. Maybe you should not conclude that the reason it was put out was that they should "think twice", but if others want to do business with them, contribute to their charities or even have them as friends, or as Castro said “Sad to see so many San Antonians as 2019 maximum donors to Donald Trump he kept it to the 44 donors that have made their money off the backs of that Latino community and contributed the maximum amount they could. You can get that and so much more on Open secrets. You can’t they have a right to free speech but Castro doesn’t. And there is nothing that should be private in the world of politics. Who has received death threats? Or any threat at all? They say it’s possible, but I can’t find a single incident.

scottva

@amerigirl - Do you even realize the flagrant hypocrisy here? Castro provided donor information for Trump supporters, yes, this is publicly available. However, what is not legal, ethical or deserving is to publicly refer to these Trump donors as racists or supporters of hate, that's called slander boys and girls. Free speech is afforded to us all BUT character assassination and slander are not.

Castro - "Their contributions are fueling a campaign of hate that labels Hispanic immigrants as ‘invaders,'"

It's one thing to post donor info BUT referring to these donors as racists/haters, well that's just f'ed up. So please, if you're going to post a comment like this, be factually accurate not selectively opinionated.

drymillrd

Castro in his own words (not mine): "And I hope that these donors in San Antonio and donors throughout the country, unless you support the white nationalism and racism Donald Trump is paying for and fueling, then I hope you as a person of good conscience will think twice about contributing to his campaign," As for death threats, google "106.3 Chilling Recording of Threats Following Donor List". You are right that political donor's info is publicly available. What Castro did was to assemble a list of private citizens and publish it on twitter. Justify if all you want but it consequently served the purpose of a dog whistle for people to harass private citizens who supported a political opponent. This is a direct attack on our democratic discourse and civility in general. Apparently you are fine with that.

RoundHillGuy

Newsweek, " southern poverty law center settles lawsuit after falsely labeling extremist organization" a simple google search shows you what the SPLC really is. "The SPLC has lost all credibility" Washington post .

amerigirl

And I thought this article was about Matthew Q. Gebert. SPLC admitted why they used the label, said it was too strict, apologized and paid. They even got rid of their leader. The post, Newsweek, you can’t get to without an account, why use that if it’s not accessible? Other papers don’t agree with them. Selective.

Adinah

America is a mess with all the hatred, with exception of our stellar military. This story would be more credible and believable if there was a picture of this guy, though

"State Department" doesn't always mean that's who someone works for.

jke

The SLPC group labeling the Family Research Council racist, priceless! They are a sad joke compared to what they once were. Propaganda arm for democrats and socialists.

amerigirl

Always a conspiracy theory going on with you. The SPLC has listed the FRC as a hate group since 2010 because it has knowingly spread false and denigrating propaganda about LGBT people—not, as some claim, because it opposes same-sex marriage.

ace10

Defending the SPLC. LOLLLLLLL

amerigirl

Ace, you probably think any group like SPLC or ACLU that are watchdogs shouldn't be defended, right?

Lawman

Comments in this section especially the last few prove why these people can hide in broad daylight. Not much separates the Nazi's view from the views of many of these commenters Like that seem like nice people comment. Isn't that what they say about most mass shooters afterwards?

jke

Sounds like ref flag run amok!

AmeliaJohnston

I don't normally get active on journalism websites, but I need to speak out.

I know these two wonderful people. I've babysat for them, taught their kids to paint, stayed in their home. Anna has been a good friend of mine for YEARS. She's a wonderful mother, showing her kids it's okay to be a strong independent woman with a family. She's always taken pride in her place in the workforce.

I'd like to know what the proof is, honestly. I've seen a few articles about how her husband is a nazi. But there's never any proof. This is America. "Innocent until proven guilty" is the law of the land. I've said the same thing to people who get mad at Muslim immigrants. You can't just say someone is guilty.

Mjohnson

I’ve known Anna from the gym for quite awhile, she seems so nice and professional. I call bs. The SPLC screams Nazi at everyone that disagrees with any little part of their political agenda. They probably just like guns or Trump or something a little too much for the SPLCs liking. Get your news from somewhere better than that garbage site.

amerigirl

Follow the link in the article, or google it, there are pictures too.

LoudounPulse

Did they also find bird seed at his house? I think we found the bird seed/letter man.

LoudounClear

Based on my reading of some of the comments on this site, I'm guessing there's more than a couple white nationalists in Leesburg. MAGA!!!!!!!

amerigirl

Probably some KKK too.

Duncan Idaho

And his middle initial is “Q”. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

ace10

SPLC is a domestic terror organization.

amerigirl

acre do you know what a domestic terror organization is? Guess not. They aren't terrorist, they look for them.

ace10

They are a politically-driven hit squad. Nothing more, nothing less. Laughable that you believe otherwise.

Loudoun4Trump

what law did he break? he is a sick person and needs help, but I thought freedom to assemble and speak was in our constitution somewhere....I don't like what the person is saying, but I think he has a right to say it.....unless he was plotting an attack and that is a different story, but nothing in this article points to that ….just a nice sensationalized article that has ruined this person's life and it may not even be accurate or true.....the SPLC has zero credibility, they are a mouthpiece for sick minded democrats that accuse people of all kinds of crimes that they never committed....Russia collusion? obstruction? Trump is a racist? Putin's puppet? cant wait for four more years of a trump presidency....

LoudounClear

Like Trump has shown us...there aren't laws against everything. Used to be people followed certain norms and behaved in a civilized way so you didn't have to write a law to stop every sort of sleazy behavior. As we watch the Trump crime family operate, we realize that we need to get rid of the enablers and get some new laws on the books so this nonsense doesn't happen again.

Skyprince

You are living in a dream world if you think Trump will win again. That was a terrible anomaly. Can you look yourself in the mirror and still say you support this lying, cheating, sick man? Really? What has he done? Nothing but golf. Didn't he say he would be too busy to golf? That Mexico was paying for the wall? None of the things he said he would do has happened. Shame on you for being sucked into his web of lies. OMG...he was cheating on Moronia right after she gave birth! This is who you support? Dream on pal...he ain't winning again....and yes there was certainly obstruction. Did you take the time to the read the Mueller report? I did...and if you had, you would see that this guy is a fraud, a fake and a disgrace.

Loudoun4Trump

what has he done? Roaring economy, tax cuts, 2 supreme court picks, deregulation everywhere, addressing immigration, criminal justice reform, new trade deals, getting out of loser trade deals and phony climate crap, north korea under control, all rogue nations are under control, its not like Russia is invading countries like under Obama.….doing this all the while a phony witch hunt against him -- a complete hoax, that is finally being exposed....have you seen the 302s on Oher....Oh my! Trump in a landslide in 2020 unless something drastic changes in the next year.....get out of the DC bubble and you will learn what americans think of the president...49% approval last time I checked even with non stop negative media coverage.....must infuriate the ivy league journalists....

DavisB

if you are not cringing every time Trump speaks or tweets, why not?

amerigirl

But that the exact reason he might win. Not because it is who the people want. it's because he is a liar and a cheat. Do you think he has any interest in stopping the Russians from interfering in the election? It got him there once,

Pocoyo

It's perfectly legal for him to believe and say what he wants. And it's perfectly legal for LTM to publisize it. And it's perfectly legal for him to be denied employment, or other economic benefits on the basis of his speech.

amerigirl

Especially when he lied to get his security clearance.

DavisB

wonder which alias he has been posting under here on LTM. There are so many to chose from

drymillrd

Honest question: is it illegal to be a white nationalist? I am in no way condoning or offering support to their cause, but is the cause illegal or is it just disgusting and worthy of condemnation? Obviously if a white nationalist performed an illegal act in the name of their white nationalist beliefs, that would be illegal; but if they simply have beliefs that they discuss within the four walls of their home, is that illegal? If it is legal, is it the duty of the media to single out someone simply because they have abhorrent beliefs? Again, I am not offering support for the alleged offender in this article other than the basic civil protections we all would like to live under.

countyresident

drymill-you are exactly right. It's all free speech whether we like the speech or not. But there is continual pressure to silence. That's worse than the ugly "speech"

amerigirl

Maybe you guys should read his posts about getting rid of any people of color and making this country all white. This country does not permit genocide.

CindyLou

Yes, they are a hate group.

Concerned

Amerigirl, what are your thoughts on gentrification? The Waterford Foundation completely gentrified Waterford, with not a single African American resident remaining, including, for example, taking their church and their school. This, to me, is appalling. Just wondering your thoughts?

btm11

It's an issue of employment standards, not criminal activity. He is still being paid. Still, it does seem reminiscent of the McCarthy era red scare blacklist.

CindyLou

Is it OK that ISIS be in your neighbors home discussing their hate?

amerigirl

If the are planning an attack, yes. They are a designated terror group and should be reported immediately.

scottva

Actually, yes it is legal for them to do so. White people are the scapegoats for everything these days, double standard doesn't even begin to describe what our society has turned into. Racist is a word that has no meaning anymore. Can ISIS discuss hate in their homes? Yes. Can white supremacists discuss hate in their homes? Yes. What about the Black Panthers and Black Lives Matter? Yup, they can as well. Unless any of these groups have committed a crime and hate is not a crime, they can discuss whatever they want.

Any idea how many black nationalists there are? Black Lives Matter is a great example BUT you cannot condemn them or call them out on their hateful rhetoric or, you guessed it, are a racist. Go to the BLM website or the Black Panthers website and then look at a white supremacists website, they are all saying and wanting the EXACT SAME THINGS.

News flash, not even the self righteous can claim they've never discussed "hate" in one way, shape or form. Like others have asked, what crime did this guy commit?

Count Quackula

Well I’m definitely white, and I’m proudly a nationalist. What does that make me?

scottva

A racist like the rest of us, well according to the think tank that posts comments here.

amerigirl

Are you really a nationalist, a person who strongly identifies with their own nation and vigorously supports its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations, or a patriot? 'White' nationalist believe that they are supporting a nation where everyone must be white.

avalonwitch

Awesome. And loyal to the constitutional republic.

scottva

@drymillrd - While it's not illegal to be a white nationalist it is socially unacceptable. However, it is socially acceptable to be a black nationalist. Think about people running for political office that run on a platform of doing everything for blacks, reparations for example. Many people posting comments here are conflating "white nationalist" with "white supremacist". No one ever discusses black nationalists because it would be, well, racist. If white people do the exact same thing as black nationalists, they are, well, racists. Ever see a black guy wearing a t-shirt that says "Proud to be Black"? My thought is good for you and it doesn't bother me. Try wearing a "Proud to be White" t-shirt and see how severe the backlash is. Double standard doesn't even begin to describe the hypocrisy in our society.

Me, I'm proud to be white and yet I accept all other races until there's reason not to, which usually happens on a case by case basis, not a broad sweeping condemnation of an entire race. I like and hate people equally and yet I'm white, what a conundrum.

amerigirl

I agree with you. My God that is weird. But there are plenty of White Nationalist online in and available for sale. Lots have the swastika sign or have the names of their organizations on them like the proud boys. But there are also white power with the fist, even one with the Pillsbury Dough Boy.

avalonwitch

It's not illegal to be antifa. They don't even go to jail for pepper spraying elderly people in the face, or for throwing balloons and containers of excrement at protests. They don't get jailed for throwing fast drying concrete at people they hate, or for burning and tipping over cars. They don't get jailed for calling in bomb threats, or publicizing home and work addresses of people they set up for intimidation and harassment. The media doesn't even talk about them when one of their own shoots up a bunch of people in Dayton, Ohio. None of the nice pink hat-wearing, rainbow flag-waving, coexist peaceniks have anything but good things to say about Antifa and their near daily violence.

But anyone who disagrees with liberal poison is "worthy of condemnation" and should be silenced. I'm glad peaceniks don't have tanks-- we would have Tiananmen squares all over the nation.

Loudoundad

Is this guy part of the "Deep State" we have been hearing about on Fox News and Rush Limbaugh?

amerigirl

Maybe it's QAnon. What a joke, and so many fell for it!

workhardgetahead

Obama was joke and you fell for him!

PvilleIndependent

Is he a white nationalist or a white supremacist? How are the lslamists in congress good people, but this man deserves to be put on leave? The SPLC is under investigation as a hate group in it's own right. What are they a valid source?

ChucklesTheClown

Actually, a person that thinks that every member of the largest religion on Earth are bad.... is the bad person.

CindyLou

What does your comment mean?

amerigirl

White nationalism is a term that originated among white supremacists, I guess it makes them feel patriotic. What lslamists are in congress? There are 2 Muslims, and that is a religion, not a violent faction. Of course, this man should be put on leave, and fired. Under his alias “Coach Finstock” he expressed a desire to build a country for whites only, and has talked of taking over the country for whites only. Doesn't that alone make him a traitor? He has even said in his posting that he knew his affiliation could cause him to lose his job. And no the SPLC is not under investigation as a hate group, who ever told you that one?

scottva

Nailed it. I wonder if this will be discussed in the next Congressional White Caucus or promoted on WET (white entertainment television). Congressional race/ethnic caucuses and TV channels are reserved for minority groups, a congressional white caucus and TV channel would be completely racist. No double standard here.

amerigirl

Why would a majority need a caucus? Their rights are already in place. The purpose of a caucus is to decide on policy. The caucuses that the Dems currently have are Congressional Progressive Caucus, Medicare for All Caucus, New Democrat Coalition (NDC), Blue Dog Coalition, Blue Collar Caucus, Expand Social Security Caucus.. If you are talking about the Congressional Black Caucus (bi-partisan), Congressional Hispanic (consists of 2 factions,1 from each party) Caucus, and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (Bi-partisan). There is no reason that a majority would have a caucus because they can create the policy without one. As for TV, most shows are geared toward the general public public, which is white. They throw in minorities to show that they are not racist. Like one of my black friends says that they have too many blacks playing white roles and they just sound stupid doing it.

RoundHill_also

You dont sound so 'Independent' @PvilleIndependent , casually dropping a lot of racist garbage in this comment. Let me answer a few of your questions:

'White Nationalist' is a term white supremecists developed so they could get invited on FOX and write op-eds without the baggage of explaining their real agenda.

Can you define an Islamist? You surely don't mean the duly-elected Muslim representatives in Congress?

This man deserves to be put on leaves because he has actively worked towards a a White-only US at the highest levels of government. He has associated with violent white supremacists, and attended a rally where people he supports killed someone. All of this while concealing his identity, why? Because he know's its wrong.

SPLC is not under investigation as a hate group - Please tell us who is investigating them? Fox news? LOL. Or racists who dont like being called out as bigots?

Be Independent, your comment reeks of anything but that.

CindyLou

And now what? One good thing is now we know where those "KKK" notices and papers were coming from. Aren't White Nationalists considered terrorists yet? Good thing he's not an immigrant.

RoundHill_also

Hey Cindy, hate to tell you he's not the source of the KKK flyers.

This guy was a 'suit-and-tie-nazi', keeping up appearances to push his agenda at the highest levels of government - truly frightening. Dropping flyers with birdseed was way below this bigot. So yes, one more racist in Loudoun uncovered, but more to go [sad]
