Loudoun County High School

Loudoun County High School’s mascot will no longer be the Raiders, as the Loudoun County School Board unanimously voted early Tuesday in favor of its removal.

As Blue Ridge District Representative Ian Serotkin detailed last week, the Raiders moniker has Confederate roots, paying homage to John S. Mosby, who commanded a battalion of Confederate soldiers known as Mosby’s Raiders, Mosby’s Rangers or Mosby’s men.

Per Serotkin, Mosby’s Raiders were “noted for their lightning-strike raids on Union targets and their ability to consistently elude pursuit,” and they “disrupted Union communications and supply lines.”

The mascot was selected out of four options in 1954 by the then-segregated, all-white LCHS student body. Further, Serotkin said the Confederate flag was part of the school’s emblem until community protests resulted in its removal in the late 1970s after Black LCHS parent Gene Ashton chopped the symbology off the school sign with an ax, prompting community protests.

Many of the nearly 300 public commenters at Monday’s School Board meeting — which ran until roughly 1:20 a.m. Tuesday — vocalized their support for the Raider mascot’s removal.

LCHS Class of 2008 graduate and Yale research scientist Kristy Clark cited a study that suggests minority high-school students who are exposed to racially insensitive mascots “had lower self-esteem … than teens who were not exposed to such mascots.”

“By retaining Raiders, a mascot with Confederate origins, how many students of color are we reminding, ‘This is how we see you — through the lens of the Confederacy’?” Clark later added.

Conversely, a handful of commenters, including Robert Ferraro, favored keeping the Raiders moniker intact and re-contextualizing it to honor similarly-named Union squadrons. Ferraro referred to the Andrews Raiders, a team of Union soldiers led by civilian spy James J. Andrews.

“It is time to change that homage or association, just like it is time to cease glorifying the Confederacy by creating a new origin,” he said.

However, no School Board members concurred with the calls to change the mascot’s namesake rather than the mascot itself. After making the motion to call for the mascot’s removal, Serotkin explained Mosby’s legacy was pervasive in his family’s former Aldie community, whence he would travel on John S. Mosby Highway to go to work each day.

“I have had enough of being reminded of the Confederacy every time I drive across my district and my county, but it doesn’t really matter how I feel. I’ve heard loud and clear from Black students and parents on this issue. Imagine how they feel driving across a county with the Confederacy still plastered all over it, and we don’t have to imagine because they’ve told us over the course of the last month, and really since 1954,” Serotkin said.

“We cannot continue to venerate those who took up arms against the United States of America to defend slavery, not with our monuments, not with our roads, and not with our schools and our mascots,” he added. “Black lives matter, and Black students matter.”

Beth Barts (Leesburg District), whose son is an LCHS graduate, said she has had to undergo a period of “personal growth” after learning of the Raiders’ origins, and that she “fully support[s] changing the mascot without question.”

She continued, “People may question, ‘What good does changing the name do?’ It stops perpetuating a hateful history, it closes a chapter and allows the community, our community, to move on and focus on the change needed to end systemic racism. The history of the Civil War should be taught; however, it should not be celebrated with our mascot.”

“The Confederacy is a huge black mark on our history, and I think we need to make sure that we eradicate this, whatever the cost may be,” Harris Mahedavi (Ashburn District) later added.

The board’s decision follows several weeks of worldwide racial tension, which has led many southern localities, including Loudoun County, to reconsider the presence of publicly-displayed Confederate imagery.

A number of participants in the meeting’s public comment section criticized the board for responding last week to the LCPS Action Plans to Combat Systemic Racism — which Superintendent Eric Williams presented — with a brief conversation that only touched upon the issue of the LCHS mascot, rather than delving into other pressing issues.

Jeff Morse (Dulles District) responded to these critiques by saying the mascot change is “not the only action that we are focused on; it just merely is the first action we are focused on.”

School Board Chairwoman Brenda Sheridan (Sterling District) said before the vote she had spoken with Williams to figure out a way to work the mascot change into the division’s budget, which has undergone extensive alteration amid the COVID-19 health crisis.

LCPS staff will later engage the LCHS community to decide on a new mascot for the school, according to board documents.

Since I was quoted in this article, I thought you might want to read my entire speech. Given the one minute time limit, I barely touched on any of the points I wanted to make. As you can read, I tried to provide several solutions which would remove links to the Confederacy but not cost upwards of $1M to resolve. It boggles the mind that our School Board members are willing to spend "however much it costs" when there are solutions that don't cost any money. This is a perfect example of how elected officials have no problem spending other people's money. $1M could buy 5000 Chromebooks for the upcoming school year or upwards of 1,000,000 disposable face masks to help protect students and teachers against Covid this upcoming school year. But the School Board members would not even discuss any other option. I wonder if their support would be different if each member had to pay 1/10 the cost of the mascot change out of their own pockets. Maybe they would be more receptive to alternative solutions then.

Members of the Loudoun County School Board,

My name is Robert Ferraro, a 23-year resident of Loudoun County, a native Virginian, and the proud parent of two LCHS alumni (C/O 2019 and 2020) and one rising sophomore at County. I come before you today to provide pragmatic, rational solutions to the controversy of the LCHS “Raider” mascot name.

If the assertion by Diedre Dillon and A.J. Jelonek is correct, and the Raiders mascot honors Mosby’s Rangers or Raiders of the Confederate Army from the Civil War, it is time to change that homage or association, just like it is time to cease glorifying the Confederacy in the naming of public buildings, schools, monuments, etc. But I ask, is the issue with the nickname “Raiders” or is the issue with the association of the “Raiders” nickname with Mosby’s Raiders? If one doesn’t like the name “Raiders,” that is a personal preference. If one doesn’t like the association with Mosby’s Raiders, there are several solutions to resolve this issue while keeping the “Raider” nickname intact. I will present to you three solutions.

First, it is possible for you, the School Board, to designate during today’s meeting, a new origin/association for the 21st century Loudoun County “Raiders” nickname/mascot, or more appropriately, for the students of Loudoun County High School to establish a new origin/association for the “Raider” mascot. For instance, let’s look back in American history to find two groups of “Raiders” surely worthy of such homage:

1) Andrew’s Raiders – Andrew’s Raiders, the name of a group of Union Army volunteers led by James J. Andrews to disrupt Confederate railroad operations during the Civil War. James Andrews was a civilian scout for the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1862 he led a group of Union Army volunteers to commandeer a Confederate train and damage as much of the Confederate rail line from Atlanta to Chattanooga as possible. While successful, several of the soldiers, including Andrews, were caught and executed by the Confederate Army. The soldiers from this group became the first recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor for their sacrifice to our country. Certainly, honoring this group of “Raiders” would be a worthy choice for a school nickname.

2) Doolittle’s Raiders – Doolittle’s Raiders, named for Lt. Col. James Doolittle of the U.S. Army Air Forces in WWII, provided the United States with a significant morale boost following the devastating Imperial Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. As a response to the attack, in 1942 Lt. Col. Doolittle helped devise a plan to launch 16 B-25 bombers from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet and strike a blow to the Imperialist Japanese mainland. This raid, led by Doolittle himself, involved 80 airmen, eight of whom were eventually captured and killed. These brave men flew what they knew to be a one-way mission, with a high probability of failure or death, because of their devotion to our country. Certainly a school nickname honoring members of America’s Greatest Generation would be worthy of consideration for the new origin/association of the LCHS “Raiders”.

If creating a new beginning for the LCHS “Raider” mascot based on historical American heroes is not desirable, here is another possibility. Make “Raiders” so it is not a name honoring any group or individuals, but an ACRONYM representing an “IDEAL” to which every student at Loudoun County strives. We are R.A.I.D.E.R.S!

R – Relentless in the pursuit of excellence

A – Academic achievers

I – Independent thinkers and leaders

D – Determined to make a difference

E – Empowering each other to succeed

R – Respectful of classmates and faculty

S – Second to none

Here is just one example. The student body of County should actually decide what the acronym would stand for.

I have presented this School Board with three possible ways to keep the Loudoun County High School mascot while redefining what is means to be a County Raider – a new definition without any Confederate or racist origins. These options WILL NOT cost the taxpayers ONE DIME to implement, while replacing “Raiders” with the “animal de jour” or “random weather phenomenon” will cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars – money better spent educating our children this coming school year.

This can be a new beginning for Loudoun County High School and the community in general. The question is, does this School Board have the fortitude to seek a meaningful resolution to this issue or is it simply going to take the politically expedient route and ignore viable solutions that would, if implemented, forever remove any association of the Loudoun County Raiders from the Confederacy but keep the “Raiders” moniker?

Thank you, and remember, IT’S GREAT TO BE A COUNTY RAIDER!!!

David Dickinson

This is dumb.

workhardgetahead

Raiders in not racist. This is completely stupid. There are Raiders in every conflict.

What about the Oakland Raiders? I dont see anyone screaming about that. This is starting to become silly.

Now you can change the name to Marauders which is pretty much the same as a Raider.

amerigirl

We don't live in Oakland. This cool's was named for the Mosby Raiders, when you google it you get; The mascot for the school, the Raider, was named in honor of Mosby's Raiders. The mascot was chosen by a segregated student body in 1954. The original school seal depicted the Raider on horseback with a Confederate Battleflag in his hands.

Voltaire

AG--I looked at several online pictures of the Loudoun County High School "mascot". I understand that the "raider on horseback" is supposed to be Confederate. However, the soldier is wearing a kepi hat and blue uniform, which would make it Union, and it is holding a flag that does not even resemble the Confederate Battleflag. I believe that they removed this symbol in 1979.

Virginia SGP

Ain't it great how cowards like Serotkin, who never thought of defending anything in his life, gets his kicks by stamping out the names of brave leaders. Serotkin wouldn't dare say a word to anybody like Mosby were he to live back then. Serotkin would be in hiding. There is a reason the ranks of our military are disproportionately filled out by Southernerns today (of all races) even among those from the upper middle class.

The erasure of Mosby originates out of ignorance. Mosby was against slavery. His only slave - Aaron Burton - served as a personal servant and was tasked with guarding the booty from Union soldiers after successful raids of Union troops as Mosby's men went on more expeditions. Given he was in divided Loudoun after the Emancipation Proclamation, I wonder why he stayed loyal to Mosby? The story comes full circle when Mosby continued to send money to Burton as he grew old in NYC after the war. It wasn't that easy on him after the Civil War in the North. Hmmm, that sounds an awful lot like what John Beatty said about the difficulties of some ex-slaves, doesn't it.

Nobody is defending slavery. Most Southerners agree with Patrick Heny on give me liberty .... Clearly, based on the mere existence of current descendants, many did not agree with that slogan over the years. Slavery was to end in the Western Hemisphere in the 1880s. That was obviously a great thing. And there is no reason whatsoever to believe slavery in the US would not have ended very soon without the loss of 700K+ lives. But in Africa and the Muslim world, it literally took Britain invading numerous countries to stamp it out or requiring abolition in treaties to get the rest of the world to stop it. We may never know which group started slavery 1000s of years ago, but we absolutely know Europeans ended it in the late 1800s for good.

Voltaire

Virginia SGP--according to Human Rights Watch, your premise that slavery was ended for good in the 1800s is flawed. They state that slavery has never been eradicated in Africa, and it commonly appears in African states, such as Chad, Ethiopia, Mali, Niger, and Sudan, in places where law and order have collapsed.

amerigirl

So what side did he fight for? What did that side promote? He is still a traitor to his own country

Voltaire

AG--the historical record does not support that. Mosby, like other Confederate soldiers was pardoned of the act of treason by President Andrew Johnson on December 25, 1868. Furthermore, Mosby did a lot of good things for this nation after the Civil War. That is also historical fact and cannot be ignored.

amerigirl

I don't believe the pardon from someone that supported slavery should have existed. You believe because it happened it should count. Again we agree to disagree.

Voltaire

AG--fair enough. But the fact that an OFFICIAL pardon was issued by a sitting United States President makes it binding, whether you like it or not. His political views does NOTHING to erase the validity of that official document and that is historical fact and cannot be changed.

amerigirl

Volt, binding but so wrong. There is a good reason that man was impeached.

Lawman

That Trump was right. Man I am getting so tired of all this winning. Did not have lift a finger and the Racist mascot at County is gone!! By the time we get the Lee Memorial down in Richmond and that hunk of metal in Leesburg dropped into the Potomac River, I just don’t know if I can take too much more of this winning. Tell Trump I said uncle. Please make it stop. Wait until we change this history curriculum in LCPS. Brian and Big Game Bob O will be apoplectic.

But you European Americans are winning too. The EU has said you can phone home, but you just can’t come home right now. That Trump, he delivering on his promises of America First. And all this is being televised. What a Country.

Virginia SGP

Hey Lawman, so what about the names of African leaders who exported slaves throughout the 19th century? Should all their names be removed from African sites as well?

Btw, do you know who ended the practice of exporting slaves in Africa? It took an invasion by Europe to stamp out slavery in Africa. Ain't that something. The Europeans had to stop Africans from selling each other on the black market. Should that be taught in LCPS as well?

Lawman

Brian heck yeah. They should be castigated too, even more than the white slave owners. But got to remember that Europeans been slaughtering each other for centuries. Saw it first hand in Kosovo. Just wanton slaughter. So Europeans don’t have a leg to stand on from a moral standpoint.

Virginia SGP

I don't think anybody on here is saying that the human race has observed "human rights" for the overwhelming part of history. Methods of warfare and torture obviously demonstrate that.

But come on, tearing down all significant figures because of their beliefs long, long ago? There will be nobody left anywhere. Are we going to tell Muslim nations (or better yet, currently Christian nation which were led by Muslims in years past like Spain) to tear down their leaders who perpetuated slavery too? Will future generations tear down current leaders because they didn't respect the rights of chimps, dogs and cats (experimentation, etc.)?

Personally, I don't care about the LCHS mascot or many of these figures. If their claim to fame was just as part of a war, moving them to other places is fine. But many of these figures are historical outside of the Civil War. You must be able to respect the soldier who serves his country with valor without having a true ideological dog in the fight.

There are lots of areas we need to focus on to improve the lives of all and especially minorities, schools being first among them. Why can't we work on things now that significantly affect those lives? If I am a young minority kid (or any kid but focusing on getting better access for minorities now), my biggest problems are getting a good education and staying safe from other citizens (if I happen to live in a high-crime neighborhood). All of these other things are way down on the list. Can we not focus on what really affects these kids on a daily basis? This hybrid model of school alone will take away months of effective education from these kids. And LCPS' own data shows that black/Hispanic kids don't make commensurate growth during the school year as similarly situated kids. How come nobody will lift a finger to assist me on getting that fixed?

Virginia SGP

So Lawman, I have a deal for you.

Why don't you and I sign up back to back at a SB meeting or committee meeting. We can both press the SB to fix instructional issues related to minority kids (why are MAP scores lower). We can press them to fix zoning issues that concentrate poor kids in some schools.

It would be much more effective having 2 folks on different sides of several issues pressing the same points on these issues. Happy to coordinate with you any time on these in the fall.

Lawman

Actually Brian we work on a lot of similar things, just from different angles. I just like giving you a hard time sometimes, but you do go off on some offensive diatribes sometimes, so you need a bit of pushback. But Brian you as I have said on a number of occasions you are a very necessary advocate and evil to some at times. You would get more done if you stop swinging in the dark and put together some coalitions.

Accountability

Lawman you have no room to talk on offensive diatribes. You have comments removed for physical threats of violence, stuff you only say because you have an alias to hide behind. It's going to be hysterical when a team of social workers and one police officer show up to your house to confiscate your guns.

amerigirl

Acct., I have received messages that you have had pulled also, he’s not the only one. I know your real name isn’t Accountability. They have no reason to take his guns and that is not how it works. No judge is going to take them from him.

Virginia SGP

Accountability, give it a rest. He signed up for the Marines. What have you ever done?

His identity is known and he is no threat to attack anyone.

Voltaire

AG--actually, there is a documented threat of physical violence made by Lawman on this site against another poster and that forced the LTM moderator to shut down the comments feature. As to red flag consideration, depending on viewpoint of the jurist, that may be enough for him/her to make that determination.

Jeanne T

People were slaughtering each other long before there was a Europe. Violence wasn't invented by "Europeans". You apparently haven't read the Bible, where there are many narratives of the pagan cultures which surrounded the Israelites. These pagan cultures (e.g., the Canaanites and the Amorites) practiced, among other things, infant sacrifice by burning them in the arms of their idols in order to appease their gods in hopes of obtaining personal peace and affluence. They worshipped idols and practiced witchcraft. They were thoroughly polluted. And that is why God warned His people over and over and over to not mingle with these cultures, or they would be destroyed, as He utterly wiped out many of the pagan cultures. Primitive tribes in the jungles have been slaughtering each other for centuries; the Aztecs also practiced human sacrifice to appease their gods. Many of the "American Indian tribes were extremely violent, and long before the Europeans showed up.

As for Kosovo, you can thank Bill Clinton for that mess. And I think you would have learned a lesson there, but it doesn't appear to be so, Which is this: There is no such thing as a sinless culture, no such thing as a pure ethnic group. You can scour the earth all you want in an attempt to find the "noble savage". But there is no such thing because there is nothing noble about savagery.

amerigirl

Jeanne, he didn’t say that it started there, he said it ha existed. That makes your reply moot. Are you just one of those people that likes to blame the dems for everything? The US as part of NATO was in Kosovo for humanitarian reasons. I don’t think you understand what the war was even about from your reply.

amerigirl

What is named after them? Some people will do anything to be rich.

workhardgetahead

You have Derrick Chauvin to thank.

amerigirl

What would you ever thank a murderer for?

RTDOC

So does this mean we need to change name of state route 50 (John Mosby hwy) as well?

Jayhawk

Hopefully yes.

Lawman

Byrd is next. Then Jeff Davis and we will get around to 50. And it’s being televised.

Mr. “PC”

My confusion... do you truly believe that the people of Loudoun County and other counties named these highways and byways because they were racist? No. They named them after figures of stature.. say a governor, military leader, revolutionary. The fact that we are turning this into a political push makes no sense. Sure Harry Byrd was a bigot and racist. No disagreeing with that but if we rename everything around us... are we pretending these people didn’t exist?

guest

See you would not understand what it is like going to school when you are black in Loudoun County. Can’t walk around the halls without another person calling you the n word or flaunting a white power sign. So when you ask if these people are truly racist yes they are.

amerigirl

Not only were they racist but they were honoring people who were. Those figures of stature.promoted slavery and racism and were until their deaths, Byrd admitted he was wrong and apologized.Sure they existed but they should not be honored for the type of existence they had.

amerigirl

Guest, so sorry you have to go through that just to be able to get an education. It is disgusting.

Voltaire

AG--I think that Lawman is referring to Harry Byrd, not Robert Byrd. However, I suspect that he probably has a complaint against Robert Byrd too.

amerigirl

Good idea.

KK153

Mosby would want the name removed. he would understand the county is filled with carpetbagging buttercups afraid of their own shadows... not worthy of the name of Raiders

Lawman

KKK you need a nap or milf and cookies.

Jayhawk

Carpetbagging Buttercups is a great band name.

workhardgetahead

There was a bunch of them rioting and looting just a few weeks ago.

amerigirl

Bunch of who?

guest

Just like there is a huge group like you who will go around flaunting confederate flags draped across your lifted trucks to try and make yourself feel better

amerigirl

KKK aren't you cute, what a stupid name, give it up you lost

guest

Aw what are made that they are actually trying to do something about the racism that flies through loudoun county schools?

KK153

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

amerigirl

This is not 1984 and history isn't going to change. History will still be the same without having to use racist symbols that insult an entire sector of the public

Periodic Table

"This is not 1984." You're right. George Orwell's math and prediction was off with 36 years. He is human too, so give him some slack, will you ?

Yes, history will be the same ... just too bad there won't be anybody telling it in the near future cause, you know, cause it may offense somebody ...

By the way, "amerigirl", what do you do when you're not posting on this site ? Reloading the page ? :-)))) Do they pay you well for the "job you're doing here" ?

amerigirl

Table, give him slack? Have you read his comments to other people? He wasn’t just off; it was fantasy land. History will still be taught; it will still be told and available to anyone interested. You are right there with him in fantasy land. If you read these posts you would know that I am retired. You would also know that I do a lot of volunteer work. Much of that in the school system. Are you doing anything constructive for the students in Loudoun? I am still tutoring kids when they have questions through emails, what are you doing? So stop with your little conspiracy theories and get real. [beam]

Jayhawk

The history we taught in our schools was a lie. The Confederacy was never honorable. Washington and Jefferson may have been great leaders of their age, but they enslaved and abused human beings...they don’t get a pass.

It’s high time we look at and depict history from the perspective of ALL citizens, not just the rich white landowners.

Voltaire

Jayhawk--no, that is not correct. The historical record is what it is. The fact that you don't like it is not material to this conversation. I don't believe that anybody is "glorifying" the Confederate States of America. However, it existed and is part of the historical record and it is important to understand why it existed and how it conducted itself during the Civil War period of U.S. History. As for Washington, Jefferson, and other founding fathers of this nation, you have to look at them from the viewpoint of when they lived in this country. You cannot apply 2020 standards to that time period as it is an unfair/unequal comparison no matter how hard you want to. Nobody is granting them a pass. But, again, you have to understand the time period.

amerigirl

There are plenty of confederate flag waving people that are "glorifying" the Confederate States . I have heard people yelling abut how the south will rise again etc. They are out there.

Voltaire

AG--those individuals that you describe are in the minority. However, it does not change the overall thrust of my statement.

amerigirl

Volt, minority or not, you were the one that stated " I don't believe that anybody is "glorifying" the Confederate States of America." If you think that everyone who wishes the confederacy or the sympathy towards the south, or think they are better because they are white, is in a group that is wrong. There are haters out there a lot more than you seem to think there are.

Lee_S_Burger

John Champe is next up: In the Civil War, the Confederate rifle company from Aldie, Virginia, "Champe's Rifles", named themselves in honor of Champe.

amerigirl

public vs private, DUH

Jayhawk

Good.

Abelia

That should have been 1752, not 1952!!

Abelia

For the record, John Champe fought in the Revolutionary War, NOT the Civil War. He was born in 1952 and died in 1798. There is no record of him or his family ever owning slaves, and he died in poverty.

Voltaire

Abelia--thank you for the information. It is informative.

Loudoun4Trump

a million bucks down the drain.....a kid spoke at session last night and said the raiders could be named after the union general raiders....so no need to change the name or waste a million....shot down, need to keep the destruction going until the election in november....

amerigirl

But it wasn't, The mascot for the school, the Raider, was named in honor of Mosby's Raiders. The mascot was chosen by a segregated student body in 1954. The original school seal depicted the Raider on horseback with a Confederate Battleflag in his hands.

Loudoun4Trump

The logo looks like two swords to me.....you can change the Raiders figure who you want it to represent.....the kid is smarter than the school board members that is for sure....

amerigirl

Sure just like the crossed sword logo on the confederate kepi. Sure he is you keep thinking that

Voltaire

AG--no, your opinion that the "two swords crossed" equates to a Confederate symbol is clearly wrong. Those two swords crossed is a recognized branch insignia for a cavalry unit. That is standard for both Union and Confederate Armies. It was in use until 1940 when the calvary was transitioned to and it is still recognized today by the U.S. Army. There is nothing wrong with that.

amerigirl

The Raiders mascot was established when Loudoun County High School opened in 1954, inspired by the Confederate cavalry unit Mosby’s Rangers. Until 1980, the mascot was depicted as a mounted soldier carrying a Confederate battle flag. So they have shortened it, it is still wrong.

Voltaire

AG--If, as they did in 1979, removed Mosby's and other Confederate images and simply left the crossed swords. No, it is not wrong. Are you going to tell me that a symbol that is recognized WORLDWIDE as a symbol for a Calvary unit for both Union and Confederate forces is wrong? Really? Give me a break.

Borninloudoun

That was changed. That speaker was right and it would save taxpayers over a million dollars. Do you pay property taxes in Loudoun?

amerigirl

Really? I would pay more taxes in a heartbeat if it kept my fellow Loudouners from being

degraded.

Voltaire

AG--I believe that you are in the minority who would want to pay more taxes purely on philosophical basis.

amerigirl

Volt, seriously doubt that. It's not like it can't be averaged out over years.

Voltaire

AG--I seriously doubt that the majority of this county (expand it out to also include the Commonwealth of Virginia and United States) want to pay more taxes. That is nonsensical.

amerigirl

Volt, I bet most people would give up $5 a year to fix the wrongs in Loudoun, and there are a lot of people here.

Voltaire

AG--you can donate as much as you want. However, I don't plan on doing so as I can do better things with my money than giving it to the Government.

amerigirl

Volt, you do that just don't let that $5 burn a let in your pocket

Wahoowah

If they were offended and if all the white people were so offended why did they play for them and why did the white people root for them? Tell me.

amerigirl

Where was the choice they had if they wanted to play? Not there, it's school pride not mascot or logo pride.

ChocolateDinosaur

I am here for the melting snowflakes. [love]

Loudoun Observer

You came to the right place. Next week they burn the books they don't like. Have we removed all the pictures of black people from our rice and syrup yet? So much virtue signaling I've lost track. This extended holiday weekend it's possible as many as 200 black people will be shot by other black people in Chicago alone, but I'm glad we are focusing on the truly problematic issues of our time.

Jayhawk

Adding context and voice for ALL our citizens is “virtue signaling?”

Privileged and blind.

Voltaire

Jayhawk--really? You think that the manufacturers of these consumer products are doing this "out of the goodness of their hearts"? Get real. The reason they are doing this is to keep their consumer base happy so that they continue to buy those products as they know, as anyone who understands markets/economics knows, that if they don't change them that they will lose market share to competitors.

You really think book burning is acceptable? That is wrong and not acceptable in a democratic society. If you do think that, then you should move to a communist controlled country. There, the STATE will gladly tell you what the official belief is and will gladly make you comply with it.

Finally, who gave the "moral authority" to judge anyone as "privileged and blind"? This is the United States and people, whether you like it or not, are still allowed the right to express their viewpoints. Whether those viewpoints fit the "popular majority narrative" is irrelevant.

amerigirl

Going to the extremes? You must be white because if you were a person of color getting equality is the truly problematic issues of our time.

Voltaire

LO--no, we haven't removed all the pictures from packaging of consumer goods. The decision to change the image on those packages is the marketing decision of the manufacturer. If the market research supports that decision, then they should do it as it is a competitive marketplace and people may buy other brands if they are unhappy with that image. It applies to other products that have other ethnic groups besides blacks. I heard that the "Eskimo Pie" is being rebranded. Nothing wrong with that. As for Chicago IL and its violence problem, there probably will be violence there. It is a good time for the over 70 gangs in that city to fight for turf so yes the number of drive-by shootings and associated gang activity would logically go up.

amerigirl

You have some weird conspiracy theories, better tell trump fast so he can jump on that.

I had commented earlier and didn't hit "post"....but I said the same thing about the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders - why not just rebrand and take the guy off the horse emblem and make it a Pirate type of emblem. Will Oakland/Vegas be changing the mascot because someone could connect it to Mosby? Most people in Loudoun today don't even know where the Raiders' name came from. I'm a Loudoun Valley graduate and so many people in this county now aren't even from here. Will John Champe be changing their mascot? The Black Knights? Why not the Purple Knights? I'm offended because they picked a color, why not just the Knighs? Freedom - the Eagles. Why did they pick that bird? I like Hawks better and they're more common to this area so I'm offended. The New York Giants - little people should be offended. Pretty soon there will be no mascots and just be the school name or the city name of the team. That way no one will be offended. The name Raiders does not constitute just Mosby. We could call the people looting stores as Raiders and they aren't ashamed of it.

John Mosby was a republican and very outspoken against slavery. He as most people at that time felt more loyal to his home state than the united states. prior to the civil war most people's national identity was tied more to their state than the usa. as a good citizen you serve you country in a war even if you know your country is in the wrong so to speak. A lot of his operational tactics and ideologies are a basis for US special operations. His group of men were know as raiders or rangers. Army Rangers and Marine Raiders are currently of the toughest dudes in the us military. After the civil war Mosby prosecuted a corrupt tax collector, served as a federal agent for the USDOJ, severed as a diplomat to Hong Kong, and became personal friends with President Grant. This statue removal isn't about racism its about rewriting american history and separating from our past. they are trying to separate us from our basic american values and heritage. they are trying to separate us the fact that our county was created when some dudes got tired of taxes and gun control and then defeated the mighty British army.

You are preaching to the wrong people. Most of the radicals who led this charge would NEVER sign up to defend anything or anybody in war. They would dodge the draft if one came about. They simply cannot understand why anybody should honor bravery or honor. For goodness sakes, Mosby left his personal bodyguard (a slave) guard the booty from the Union soldiers along. Mosby later made payments to this ex-slave for years after the war to ensure his well-being.

Complex characters simply blow the minds of these radicals. They deserve to be ruled by tyrants. They are free because of men like Mosby.

DavisB

praising Mosby here is a new low for your racism

Wahoowah

They would dodge the draft? You mean like your President because of a heel spur? There is no greater example of a draft dodger than Trump. I'm a Democrat and I think the statues should be put in Museums - you don't honor traitors which is what the Confederacy was. I come from a long line of family members that were Democrats and fought in WWI and WWII and Korea and Vietnam. Raiders have been a mascot for many states, nations, and teams for years and they do not mean Mosby. And I can easily use the word "radicals" and connect you with Fred Phelps and Westboro Baptist - I'm sure they voted Republican. Bravery or honor? The Confederates are traitors and tried to split a nation. Raiders name should stay, Confederates need to stop trying to honor traitors. Statues should go, the name Raiders should stay. And we are being ruled by a tyrant. A really stupid one. Mosby made payments to his slave? How admirable. Again, every article's comments turn political on this site by Conservatives. The real Radicals. The white Supremacists are voting for your party, not mine. You've got that in common - so good for you.

Brian I know you about ready to have a conniption son. I keep telling you the difference is you make noise and we get things done.

Voltaire

Lawman--the only thing that I see you making is changes in the weather pattern due to the excessive amounts of hot air that you spew out on a daily basis. I am still waiting in breathless anticipation to see some "tangible results" produced from your awe inspiring "promises".....

amerigirl

and still he fought for slavery, as he said, right or wrong.

The mascot for the school, the Raider, was named in honor of Mosby's Raiders. The mascot was chosen by a segregated student body in 1954. The original school seal depicted the Raider on horseback with a Confederate Battleflag in his hands.

Moderndad

Typical of LCPS. Instead keeping the Raiders name and rebranding it so it represents something other then Mosb'y Raiders, which would virtually cost nothing, they choose to spend our tax dollars to change it completely. Our public school system is run by over-educated idiots.

LOL this country has gotten too soft and hung up on BS. What about the Oakland Raiders? This generation is fat, stupid and weak.

amerigirl

This country s finally righting it's wrongs. We aren't in Oakland. Stupidest remark I've ever seen to call this generation names like that. Which generation are you even talking about?

Voltaire

AG--that first statement is subjective at best.

Jayhawk

The Oakland Raiders were not named for Confederates fighting to keep people enslaved.

pvilleresident

Why not keep the mascot a Raider and switch the logo to the Las Vegas Raiders style logo. This country is getting too soft.

Lawman

Being a Raider Fan I am down with that!!
