Democrat Irene Shin declared victory in her campaign for the Virginia House of Delegates on Tuesday night. She faced Republican opponent Julie Perry in the general election after mounting a successful primary challenge to incumbent Ibraheem Samirah (D).

Shin had 65.6% of the vote as of 10:30 p.m., to Perry’s 34.1%, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.

Shin defeated Samirah in the 2021 Democratic primary for the district with a margin of just over 200 votes.

Shin declared victory in her race on twitter just before 10:20 p.m., writing, “I am honored to be the 86th district’s next Delegate. I’m so grateful for the tireless work our team and our supporters have put into this race for the past 10 months.”

“I will take take your voices to Richmond with me,” Shin added. “I’ve never been more ready to get to work, to build a VA that works for all.”
