Small Business Awards hit Loudoun

Modern Mechanical took home the title of 2014's best small business in Loudoun on Nov. 7 at the 20th Annual Loudoun Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards held at the National Conference Center in Lansdowne.

The HVAC company has been growing in past years to $5 million in revenue currently. CEO Shawn Mitchell is not content, however.

"I'm a big advocate of the if you're not growing you're dying," he said. "In 20 years I would like to see us be a 400 employee, $100 million company," said Mitchell.

He hopes to grow the business based on marketing the company on a networking and relationship level by going to business development events, working with nonprofits and attending rotary club meetings.

In his attempt to go above and beyond with employee training, Mitchell went to a special event laying out the practices of customer service at Ritz Carlton, which he decided to implement in his own company.

He also requires 150 additional hours of training every year for his technicians.

This is not the first time they have taken home hardware. The company's CEO and president Shawn Mitchell won the award for Entrepreneur of the Year in 2013.

This year's winner in the Entrepreneur category is Susan McCormick, the CEO of the Wellness Connection in Stone Ridge.

According to the company's website, once McCormick's husband died , "therapy not only created space for her to grieve, but it also enabled her to live a 'better' life."

This experience led her to enroll in grad school, private practice and a move to start the Wellness Connection in 2009.

Since then she has amassed a group of professionals focused on lifestyle change.

Chamber Small Business Awards were also given in the cateogries of retailer, nonprofit, service, rural, tourism/entertainment, technology and home-based business awards.
