Update: June 5, 10:01 a.m.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the drowning that claimed the life of 16-year-old Fitz Thomas on Thursday.

Authorities say the LCSO responded to the River Creek community in Leesburg to assist Loudoun County Fire and Rescue personnel for an unresponsive person in the water around 6:15 p.m.

Thomas and his friends were reportedly swimming across the confluence of Goose Creek and the Potomac River on June 4. As they crossed the water, Thomas's friends observed him go underwater, according to the LCSO. They attempted to search for him, and he was pulled from the river after being underwater for a period of time before he was located.

Thomas was taken by rescue personnel to Inova Loudoun Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
