Flowers. They are the connective tissue of Valentine's Day. They sit on desks in offices. They are delivered with a concise note of love, hope, maybe praise. They say I love you, or thank you or sorry.
Behind the scenes Jennifer Morris, director of blooms and owner at J. Morris Flowers is feverishly trying new arrangements because, "A dozen roses in a vase is so over."
People expect more. They want tulips, lilies, orchids, hydrangeas, dahlias, peonies. It all depends on the client.
Most around this time of year are men. They generally come in on the eve of the big day and ask, "You have anything different? And every year it's really up to us to come up with something different."
The demand for new products is high, and consumers, especially men buying for their wives, girlfriends or dates don't always know what to get.
"What women are sent, and what women really want are often very different," said Morris. "For men it's gotta be huge. Women want something more intimate and feminine."
They also generally wait until the last minute. Because men go in late and each may have a different request "You almost have to be ready for anything,"said Morris.
Most of the year her business is "wedding-focused, we have Christmas," then "It's crickets in January."
That is, until the second week in February when the prices of the flowers Morris must order are double and customers' orders increase ten-fold.
To switch things up the Leesburg florist has turned to design styles from the Victorian age. She also often mixes colors and flower types.
People hoping to grab some last minute flowers in time for Valentine's Day can head to her brick and mortar location in Leesburg, or find an arrangement online at jmorrisflowers.com.
