Washington Football Team

The new aesthetic and branding for the Ashburn-based NFL team.

The Loudoun County-based Washington NFL team that recently dropped its mascot and logo will go by the Washington Football Team for at least the 2020 season, giving the organization time to choose a new, full-time name.

Gone is the Indian head logo and the name Native American advocates have called a dictionary-defined racial slur. Here to stay are the burgundy and gold colors that are synonymous with the franchise’s storied history.

Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Terry Bateman, hired earlier this month to oversee the name change and rebranding process, called the temporary design “a nice link between the history and the future.”

“This is an organic kind of move,” Bateman said in a phone interview July 23. “We wanted to think it through and really try to figure out what is the best approach for us, for the community, for the fans, for everybody, and came to the conclusion that what we wanted to do was to go slow with the renaming process and really be very thoughtful, very inclusive, respectful and all those things. That’s going to require some time to do it right.”

With training camp now open, the process has begun of scrubbing the old name and logo from everything at the team’s headquarters in Ashburn to FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. Bateman expects that process to be completed by the start of the season.

That’s when the real work begins to select a new name. More than 1,000 names have been submitted, and Red Wolves and Red Tails are among the betting favorites on online sportsbooks.

“I’ve gotten long letters from people explaining their idea,” Bateman said. “What I tell everybody is everything that comes in will be put in the hopper.”

Owner Dan Snyder recently dropped the team’s former name amid pressure from sponsors and after decades of criticism from Native American advocacy groups. The franchise that began in Boston in 1932 had the previous name since 1933.

A player’s jersey number will replace the logo on Washington’s helmets, which will get their first close-up on Sept. 13 in the season opener against Philadelphia. Washington Football Team is the name throughout 2020 and could stick beyond that if the name change process drags on.

“We’re not going to put an artificial time frame on it,” Bateman said.

Marketing experts hope Snyder, coach Ron Rivera and Washington’s creative department consult with the community before determining a new name. Bateman expects fans, sponsors and others to have input before a final decision is made.

“I think it’s critically important because you don’t want to do [a name change] again,” Carnegie Mellon associate professor of marketing and strategy Tim Derdenger said recently. “You don’t want to mess this up, so they really need to take it seriously.”

It seems to me that people just don't use their brains at all anymore and they just want to be the first to comment (negatively) on a story. Did it ever occur to anyone that the team needs time to wade through the trademark process? That a professional team can't simply pick a name, slap it on their uniform and take the field? The trademark process is a long and arduous one. Replacing all the signs, everything from the thousands that say "Redskins" on them around FedEx Field to the notepads in the offices is not something that can happen overnight. Don't worry, the new name will be chosen soon enough and you can all hover over your keyboards to try to be the first to hate it publicly.

Just re-name the team the Washington Liberals and all the Lefties will be happy.

"The Washington Football Team." It sounds like the name of a team from a bad parody skit.

tolerantleft

Who cares, Kapernick destroyed the game last year when he took a knee. I'm sure fans won't watch either as more politics are injected into sports. I won't be watching MLB or NBA either since they bowed to pressure of the Marxist BLM group.

Hodor

He hasn't played in years at this point.

amerigirl

Do you know what year it is? Colin Kaepernick last played in 2016. Come on I'm a girl and even I knew that! You would let someone's peaceful protest keep you from enjoying a sport? Sad. I don't watch the skins anymore but it has a lot more to do with their sad playing abilities.

jbsets

Being a girl is irrelevant unless you plan to have a baby. That's the only thing that woman can do that men can't

amerigirl

It may be the only ting they can do but I bet statistically there are many, many more men interested in sorts than women, especially when it comes to out of town teams. o more babies for me! Lap dog maybe.

jbsets

What is a tolerantleft? Kaepernick hasn't played in four years. Where have you been?

rational

Another one of little Danny's stalling tactics.

amerigirl

Kinda, if he hadn't stalled and bought up all the internet rights to what the team might be named before someone else did they would have been named by now. Or at lest that's what I have been told.

LoudounPulse

I'm sure this would have been a bigger deal if the Redskins had been dominating football like the Patriots. But with three decades of subpar performance, the emotional attachment to the name was lacking.

jbsets

Did you all know that the Redskins were originally based in Boston from 1932-1936? They were the Boston Braves because they used the same playing field as the baseball team. When the Braves left, they were renamed the Redskins as a nod to the Red Sox since they moved to Fenway Park and to keep with the Indian name they had. After 4 years they left because the people of Boston didn't seem to get behind football even though they won the conference. They had to move the division championships out of Mass because no one cared. The Pats were formed 24 years later in 1960. They left Boston in 1970 to play in Foxborough, therefore changing the name to New England. Now New Englanders love their football and Pats. Ironic, right?

The original owner, a racist pig, was from DC and finally got the ok to move the team to DC. It was the first team in the south. He refused to integrate when the league required it using the excuse that the south would never put up with it. Two years after the mandate from the NFL, he only integrated because the Secy of the Interior and US Atty General told him that they would revoke their 30 lease on Washington Field (now RFK.) He died in 1969. He has started a nonprofit that raised funds and then doled them out to children in need in the DC area. His will stated that non of that money was to go to any organization that supported integration. A court over turned that.

Jack Kent Cooke and his family took over (he was a minority owner.) Now we have Dan Snyder, a racist in the tradition of George Preston Marshall.

If you don't believe me, google Mr. Marshall.

And his family asked that his statue be removed from RFK. In a statement, his granddaughter stated that he was an embarrassment and they were ashamed of him.

Jbsets--Not really. There are lots of people who are rather vocal opponents of tax dollars being used to fund sporting stadiums. There was a study done by the University of Chicago in 2017 that found that 98% of economists agreed that “Providing state and local subsidies to build stadiums for professional sports teams is likely to cost the relevant taxpayers more than any local economic benefits that are generated."

"Washington Football Team"

How original, stating the obvious. Not very creative, either. Which other teams will follow, and why not? After all the "controversy", it's like a scud missile that turned out to be a dud, like a joke with a bad punch line.

Loudoun4Trump

The leftists wont be happy with this.....it still has a slave holder in the team's name.....we need to be as sterile and communist as possible and should just be called Football Team 1.....the whole league can just pick their favorite number and then all victimization can cease in the nfl....

Hodor

Thanks for your insightful comments! If you would step this way with me sir we have a designated area for wing nut trolls under the bridge!

CindyLou

Loudoun4Trump.....you sure have it out for the "Leftists" don't you? You seem a little obsessed with them. Why is everything so political with your Radical Trump supporters? Just rename the darn team. I mean "Redskins" is offense to many American Indians....are they Leftists? You might want to go visit them on one of the reservations those nasty immigrants from over seas stuck them in when they took over their country. Why can't you just be nice and agree the name is offensive.

Loudoun4Trump

Correct CL....I oppose leftists who have caused so much death and destruction over the years....weather lenin, stalin, mao, castro, hitler, pol pot, on and on.....all leftists regimes end in death and disaster.....I prefer the US to avoid this mistake, you seem to support it.....and for hodor...Im no the one tearing down statues, calling to abolish the police, destroying property, creating autonomous zones, or rioting...I guess that is your view of normal, not mine....

Lets, that is a may have been blinded. But I can tell you for a fact that the feds partially or totally blinded 8 people in one day. On May 30, at least eight people lost vision in one eye after being struck by police projectiles, not to mention broken facial bones, some innocent bystanders. In most of the cases the feds have lied about why or how it happened and been refute by news footage. One guy the doctors found his eyelid in his sinuses

What does that have to do with football?

jbsets

If you even took a history class, did you pass...or even go? First of all, weather is rain, snow, sunny, etc. I think that you mean Whether. Second, Hitler was about as far RIGHT as you can get. Lenin and Stalin were the Soviet Union, again known as Russia. Putin has a pretty good handle on them and he is pretty much running the world...at least what is not being run by China. Mao is China. Xi Jinping has the US by the male organs. They're doing pretty well right now AND the are threatening to hold all American citizens currently in China and if they don't like them, put them in prison for life. You good with that? Fidel Castro kept Cuba in lockdown for almost 60 years. Under him, the majority of Cubans live in extreme poverty. Now that he is dead and his brother Raul is in power, he is trying to bring Cuba into the 21st century but only Putin will back him, as the Soviet Union did his brother (You've heard of the Cuban Missile Crisis?) I don't know what pol pot and hodor are. MOST of the US citizens, regardless of their political affiliation or philosophy, are NOT rioting, tearing down statues, destroying anything, creating autonomous zones, or calling to abolish the police. There are those who decry racism and are perhaps in favor of moving statues that are meant to honor Confederate Generals, only because they chose to lead an insurrection against the USA...you know that country you love so much. There are also those who would like to see some of the money budgeted for law enforcement used for better hiring practices including background checks and better training. The percentage of the population that feel that all police are "bad apples" is minute. No one wants law enforcement to go away. We've got enough problems withe the rule of law disintegrating. Finally all those "leftists" who you reference above and whom you oppose, and you should, are long dead. 99% of the current US population that lean left of center, are not anarchists or even as far left as left can be. Some of us are conservative on some things and more liberal on others. I can assure you that those same people have no desire to emulate any of the those dictators you reference above.

Voltaire

Jbsets—the first statement is an unfounded assumption. You do not know Loudoun4Trump’s educational background. Moving on, the term “weather” is not correct. Weather is defined by the Glossary of Meteorology as “…the state of the atmosphere at a given time and location. Weather is driven by a diverse set of naturally occurring phenomena, especially air pressure, temperature, and moisture differences between one place and another, most of which occur in the troposphere.” What you are describing are specific weather phenomena, but it is wrong to state that it is weather. Rain and snow, for example, are considered by meteorologists to be types of precipitation, not weather. No, Lenin and Stalin were NOT the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was a Federalist, socialist state that existed in Northern Eurorasia from 1922 to 1991. It was considered to be a union of multiple national Soviet republics, in practice its government and economy were highly centralized until its final years. Lenin was responsible for the organization of the Soviet Union, but he cannot be considered to be the Soviet Union. As for Stalin, he served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1953. Stalin also ruled the Soviet Union as Premier of the Soviet Union from the mid 1920s to 1953. However, he cannot be considered to be the Soviet Union either. Vladimir Putin is the President of the Russian Federation (RF). Based upon opinion polling within the RF, Putin is well liked by the public. Given what the RF went through with Boris Yeltsin, it is not overly shocking that the Russian public find that Putin has leadership qualities and has, for the most part, helped advance the country’s interests and improved pride in their homeland. You are correct about Hitler, however, he would be considered in political theory terms to be an example of far-right extremism which is different, in terms of political views, than simply being “RIGHT”. On the People’s Republic of China (PRC), I would argue that you are giving the PRC a little too much credit. It should be noted that, for a country with the highest population in the world, it also has the lowest standard of living. For example, according to the International Monetary Fund, its economy only produces approximately $10,870 per person. In comparison, the United States Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was $67,430. This low cost of living allows China to gain an economic advantage by allowing companies (either state-run or private) to pay their workers less than what American workers earn. That allowed overseas manufacturers to outsource jobs to China and allows them to ship finished goods back to developed world at cheaper prices. In 2018, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, China’s economy started losing steam. Its economic growth rate slowed to 6.5%. It had regularly been double-digit increases prior to 2011. Further, according to the Congressional Research Service, China’s economy was in a “bubble” in that the growth rate was not sustainable and led to inflation, a real estate asset bubble, growth in public debt, and also severe environmental distress (pollution). No, Mao is NOT China. The PRC is a country. The PRC is a socialist country with authoritarian government and it is expected that they would do activities as you describe in your comment. As defined in political theory, authoritarianism is a form of government that is characterized by strong central power and limited political freedoms. Cuba is another classic illustration of authoritarianism however its story is not that clean cut. You fail to mention that Cuba’s original democratic government was overthrown in a coup and replaced by a dictator (Fulgencio Batista). The July 26th Movement, led by Castro overthrew Batista in January 1959 because of open corruption/repression by Batista. The reference to “hodor” is a reference to another poster on LTM. The reference to Pol Pot is to the communist revolutionary who transformed Cambodia into a one-party communist state called the Democratic State of Kampuchea, Served as Prime Minister of the Democratic State of Kampuchea (from 1975 to 1979) and was a leading member of Cambodia’s communist movement (Khmer Rouge) from 1963 to1997. He also served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Kampuchea from 1961 to 1997. Overall, your view of the “left” is correct. However, I would disagree that the rule of law is disintegrating. I would also argue that your percentage of people who are anarchists or non-political is a little low. There is also a push by certain groups of people in the liberal left who would like to transform this country’s political/economic systems to mirror the socialist values that are exhibited in some parts of Europe, notably within the Scandinavian countries. If I wanted that, then I would move to the European Union (EU). In time, the EU may actually be more liberated than here if the radical democrats such as AOC and the “Squad” get their way as they appear to have no real grasp on the obvious.

Voltaire

AG—that is simply wrong. Federal law enforcement agents were NOT even involved in the incident that surrounds the 8 people on the May 30 protests that you are citing. MSN, a liberal news outlet, reported that the Fort Wayne Police Department, a MUNICIPAL police agency, was the agency that fired police projectiles. Further, you don’t have all sides of the incident as the FWPD said that they couldn’t comment on it because the matter is “in litigation”. But, hey, don’t let stop the anti-police conspiracy theory presented that they are “making it up” and “lying”. You call that a FACT? Not even close…

amerigirl

Volt, I’m not sure what you are talking about in Texas, but the 8 I was talking about were throughout the US. If you are talking about the one guy, I did say police. How many sides do you need when there is a video?

amerigirl

With all the conspiracy theories that republicans and the liar in chief have out there how do you even know what is true?

Voltaire

AG—Your initial post on this subject was as follows: “But I can tell you for a fact that the feds partially or totally blinded 8 people in one day. On May 30, at least eight people lost vision in one eye after being struck by police projectiles, not to mention broken facial bones, some innocent bystanders. In most of the cases the feds have lied about why or how it happened and been refute by news footage. One guy the doctors found his eyelid in his sinuses.” I responded that the law enforcement officers that you are referring to are NOT federal law enforcement agents but rather local law enforcement. There were multiple incidents where law enforcement had to use less lethal riot control munitions. One of those incidents occurred in the City of Dallas TX but another instance, occurred in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I was referring to the one in Indiana. I watched the Washington Post video of all of these incidents and I am not overly shocked that they got what they got. In the instance of Fort Wayne, Indiana, the officers were correct to fire tear gas to disperse protesters who refused to clear the intersection. They failed to follow lawful commands and were becoming violent by throwing rocks and canisters back at the officers. Protesters who are throwing rocks and canisters back to officers cannot be called “peaceful” by any normal definition. In a lot of these instances, according to the Washington Post’s own reporting, these individuals (6 out of the 8) were blinded by “unknown projectile”. So, how can you automatically assume that the individual is hit by police munitions? You can’t but that is what the Post concluded and that is subjective and wrong. The protesters in Cleveland attempted to storm the Justice Center. Is that the act of peaceful protesters? What should the Cuyahoga County Sheriff do? Let them destroy public property? No, they did the proper action. Am I really supposed to feel sorry for these individuals? No. In multiple instances they were warned and they failed to follow commands and deserve what they got.

Voltaire

AG—Sure, whatever. How about all the conspiracy theories being propelled by these “peaceful protesters” and their allies in the press corps? These videos out on the Internet show that these people are willfully non-compliant with lawful commands and unruly. They are seen launching fireworks at police lines, throwing rocks/canisters at police lines, and pointing lasers into the eyes of riot police and that is supposed to be acceptable? But, when law enforcement does the right thing and uses proper equipment/methods to disperse unruly crowds, then they are “out of control” and accused of making up stories. That is so hypocritical and disgusting. These individuals should be glad that they can do this sort of activity in this country. In other parts of the world, the police (with help from the military) are allowed to use WHATEVER methods necessary to make people disperse.

amerigirl

Volt, what conspiracy theories being propelled by these “peaceful protesters”? If that is the proper equipment/methods then why are so many places banning them? You can’t even use teargas in wars. Use of tear gas in warfare, as with all other chemical weapons, was prohibited by the Geneva Protocol of 1925: it prohibited the use of "asphyxiating gas, or any other kind of gas, liquids, substances or similar materials”. But it’s alright to use on American citizens. They are not always using them properly because it says right on each products "Danger: Do not fire directly at person(s). Severe injury or death may result." And they are shooting right at them. Still it is not just happening to the rioters it is still being used on peaceful protesters. So obviously they can’t do this sort of activity in this country. This is like other countries. The military was used here. People have had bags thrown over their heads and kidnapped off the street and thrown into unmarked vehicles. People are being hit with less lethal ballistics that has even fractured skulls. I bet they aren’t feeling to lucky.

Anyway this was about the football team so can we change the subject or move it to a more appropriate section?

Voltaire

AG—there are several points need clarification before this subject can be returned to a discussion on American style football. One, tear gas is NOT banned for use by law enforcement. Even the ACLU recognized that by stating: “…It really goes back to the Chemical Weapons Convention. At the time when it was negotiated in the 1990s, there was a lot of pressure to ban chemical weapons and they were used by law enforcement. That obviously got pushback from many countries who said, "Well, we can't really give up this weapon because if we don't use tear gas we will have to resort to more lethal weapons." The compromise that was reached was to leave that option open for using tear gas or riot control agents in law enforcement and only in law enforcement.” So, yes, it is alright to use on American citizens who are in non-compliance with the law. You cannot say that every canister of tear gas is fired at them. Several instances on video showed that the canister bounced several times before impact on the particular individual. No, the active duty military is NOT being used for law enforcement as that is a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act. Those people on the video are, for the most part, anything but being “peaceful” and they do deserve what they get. They were warned and they ignored the warnings and bear the consequences. I don’t doubt that there are peaceful protests, but there isn’t video of those because the press corps can’t get ratings for those. As for the “theory” about secret police style abductions, to quote a line from Robocop…”that is a serious charge, where is your evidence?”

Now, we can resume the discussion on American football. Although, I prefer watching European League football and Australian Rules Football better.

amerigirl

Volt you are basically repeating what I said. It is banned in war but okay to be used against the people in the US. Nobody said that every cannister is fired at someone but there are pictures of police aiming and firing at protesters and press. In fact, I said, they are not always using them properly. Which infer that they are used properly most of the time. The military was used in DC, and they did not get what they deserved. They had a permit, video and news shows that they were peaceful, it was for a photo op. It was a blatant violation of their first amendment rights, you have repeatedly said they were warned, if so please give a video where that happened. There is plenty of news videos, even one 15 ft up at the fence line with audio that show no such thing happened. There is testimony of protesters that say that never happened. There is plenty of evidence of the secret police style abductions, not sure how you haven’t heard of it. In Portland https://www.npr.org/2020/07/17/892277592/federal-officers-use-unmarked-vehicles-to-grab-protesters-in-portland and https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/507805-federal-officers-using-unmarked-vehicles-to-detain-protesters-in and this one has it recorded https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/18/us/portland-arrests-federal-authorities/index.html

Voltaire

AG—No, active duty U.S. Army troops were not used. Troops from the D.C. National Guard were used and they are considered to be different than active duty troops in terms of Posse Comitatus Act. There were U.S. Army Military Police units (16th Military Police Brigade (Fort Bragg) and 91st Military Police Battalion (Fort Drum)) that were on standby. According to the 16th Military Police Brigade headquarters, “Active duty elements are postured on military bases in the National Capital Region but are not in Washington, D.C,…..They are on heightened alert status but remain under Title X authority and are not participating in defense support to civil authority operations."

amerigirl

Volt, where did I say active duty U.S. Army troops were used? So why are you telling me I’m wrong fro something I never said? Though you must know that General Mark A. Milley (Army) was at the photo op and apologized for his role in it. U.S. Park Police and National Guard (The National Guard is a reserve component of the United States Armed Forces) troops were in attendance. I don’t believe I ever claimed that there were ‘active’ duty military anywhere. So why are you even fighting me on this?

Voltaire

AG—You, in an earlier posting, said that “the military was used in DC”. I am saying that active-duty U.S. Army personnel were not directly involved in responding to the protests in DC. Although they are considered a reserve force, the National Guard, based upon the language in the Posse Comitatus Act, is not considered to be active duty military. That is why I am adamant about the point.

amerigirl

Volt, the military was there 250 members from military police and engineering units being stationed in the national capital area. and so was the National Guard from DC. They were involved https://www.lawfareblog.com/can-trump-use-insurrection-act-deploy-troops-american-streets

Voltaire

AG—No, according to the Department of Defense, they were stationed at bases nearby on readiness alert. According to the Posse Comitatus Act, that is acceptable. If they were mobilized into the street and actively engaged in containing the riots, then that would be a violation of the Act. The National Guard, as I have previously stated, are not subject to the Act.

amerigirl

Volt, what more do you want? I gave you the article. You can see the Military police in the picture. I don’t really care what the DOD is saying. I don’t care that you call reservist not military. Gen. Mark A. Milley, is military, no matter how you look at it and has apologized for taking part in President Trump’s walk across Lafayette Square for a photo op after the authorities used tear gas and rubber bullets to clear the area of peaceful protesters.

I will look at the outcome of the Congressional investigation which starts today. I still can’t believe they were issued bayonets to use against the American people. Or that they used tear gas and less than lethal weapons on peaceful protesters who had a permit to be there and were expressing their first amendment rights. If you have heard anything about the upcoming testimony on the subject you would know National Guard commander Adam DeMarco will testify before a House committee Tuesday that "excessive use of force" was used against protesters in Lafayette Square on June 1, refuting the attorney general's earlier assertions that force was justified. In the hearing yesterday Kishon McDonald, a 39-year-old Washington resident and Navy veteran who was present at the protest, testified; "They gave no instructions and [it was just] a show of force. We stood our ground. We told them we were peaceful we wanted no trouble. We were met with silence. At no time did I hear any instructions to move, and if we did hear instructions, I would have moved." "I served this country, so that everyone could enjoy the freedoms granted to us under this constitution. If anyone had the right to be there, it was me," Amelia Brace, an Australian journalist said she and her cameraman, Tim Myers, were hit with projectiles and chemical irritants. “A Park Police officer who was passing us stopped, turned towards Tim and rammed him in the chest and stomach with the edge of his riot shield, causing Tim to keel over and drop down."

There is no point in continuing this if you can't believe your own eyes. We will just have to wait for the outcome of the investigation.

You sound racist to me.

amerigirl

Maybe you should look up the word racist. You think everything is racist

Voltaire

AG--if you look at the official definition of racism, as I did, then Lawman's description of "toothless jerks" does actually fit the definition. It also fits the definition of stereotyping. Both of those practices are wrong and disgraceful, to say the very least.

amerigirl

Volt, where did you see anything about "toothless jerks" being racist?

Voltaire

AG—the dictionary defines racism as follows: “(1) a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others…(2) policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination…And (3) hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.” The whole statement made by Lawman supports the definition of racism under Item 1. Lawman’s post involves the idea that he has the “…right to dominate others” and is implying that those people (“toothless jerks”) are inferior.

amerigirl

Leftist think it is hilarious that snyder didn't think of getting the rights to the names people were voting on and got them bought out from under him. amerigirl

Volt, do you really think he was serious?

Voltaire

AG--given what is passed here as people's comments, one cannot be certain whether it is serious or not. Even in jest, it is still distaste to say the very least.

amerigirl
