Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of famed Mexican drug trafficker Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera, was arrested Monday at Washington Dulles International Airport for alleged involvement in her husband’s international operation.
Coronel Aispuro, 31, received charges of conspiracy to import and distribute at least 5 kilograms of cocaine, 500 grams of methamphetamines, 1 kilogram of heroin and 1,000 kilograms of marijuana in the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Coronel Aispuro also allegedly assisted Guzman Loera in his 2015 escape from Altiplano prison in Mexico and was alleged to have participated in another prison escape scheme after he was re-arrested in 2016.
Guzman Loera was extradited to the U.S. in 2017, and in 2019 a New York jury convicted him for his role as a leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Acting Deputy Chief Anthony Nardozzi and Trial Attorney Kate Wagner of the DOJ’s Narcotic and Dangerous Drug Section are prosecuting the case against Coronel Aispuro, which remains under investigation by the FBI’s Washington Field Office.As of Tuesday afternoon, Aispuro was being held at the Alexandria Adult Detention Center.
